Reading Nooks

First library story of the year
It’s the second day of school and we’ve got our first library story!
My library has windows at ceiling level above the bookshelves that are set about three feet back into the wall. (Don’t ask me what that three feet of space behind the wall is seeing as the library takes up that whole corner of the second floor. Secret storage accessible from who the heck knows? Wasted space? A weird amount of insulation?) Today during a sixth grade class, a student raised their hand and went, “Can we turn that space up near the windows into a reading nook?” There was a chorus of agreement. They claimed all we needed was a ladder and some pillows. I laugh and said that decision was past my pay grade. They should take it up with the principal.
I thought we were joking.
I was joking.
But the students, apparently, were not joking.
This afternoon, the principal poked her head into the library and asked where this reading nook the kids wanted to make was and why they needed a ladder. I laughed and pointed up to the windows. She blinked and went, “Yeah, that’s not happening.”
I blinked back and went, “I thought we were joking around. Did the kids actually think it was going to happen?”
According to the principal, the student who had originally suggested the reading nook had very much thought I was serious when I told them to ask the principal. They stopped her in the hallway and asked very seriously for the reading nook. The principal, therefore, also thought I was serious when I told the kids to ask her about it.
I’m not entirely sure I convinced the principal that I was joking about the reading nook because even though I said I was joking, I then went and said it would be cool (because it WOULD be even if it would NEVER happen). She kind of looked at me and said, “Yeah, until a kid falls out of it. Not to mention it would be an accessibility inequity.”
I swear I was joking!!!!!!
