Although it took me over a month to read, I always came back to this book. Eager to find what happened to Chase Andrews, the jerk of the small town. The Marsh Girl, Kya, left alone to fend for herself crushed me. To think of everyone abandoning her and teasing her for only trying to be a kid. The type of bullying and loneliness that people of today could not handle, including myself. I felt Kyas feelings, disappointments and heartbreaks. @authordeliaowens painted a picture so beautifully. She writes sentences that make you love the music of the marsh, the colorful feathers of a bird and the mischievous ways of insects. This is an amazing book that I will definitely pick up and read again. With The Fire On High By Elizabeth Acevedo I just finished reading this book and decided to write the review when all my emotions and feelings about it were still very fresh. I love every part of this book, I truly enjoyed the narrative and the book held my attention till the very last sentence. I enjoy how the book throws everything out in the open from the very first page, it hits you with all the hurts, hard choices and you have no choice but to follow the story and navigate the paths it leads you down. You’ll fall in love with Emoni; the outward confidence she displays and her inner demons of self doubt, that we all carry with us. You’ll start seeing Babygirl’s head of thick curls, Angelica’s sarcasm yet fierce love will become something you’ll appreciate and the vanilla on ‘Buela hands will fill your head with its smell. At the end, you will be grateful for family, for love and be left with the desire to dig into your own emotions to ask important questions about your life. In this book I discovered for the first time that there’s something called “Locus of control”. It can be internal and external. To have an internal locus of control is essential.

“Danes focus on developing childrens internal locus of control. Locus of control is referring to the place from which one feels a sense of control over one’s life. Where you believe that you have the power to control your life. By trusting your children to be able to do and try new things and give them space to build their own trust of themselves (like in play)  helps to build the ‘whole child’. We try to provide them with a scaffolding for their development to let their self-esteem climb. In the long run this makes happier children who grow up to be happy adults – and then the cycle repeats itself.”

I’m giving the audiobook version I listened to two out of five stars because the reader performed all voices as caricature accents, an aspect which periodically ruined the listening experience.
