So, it's been a quite struggle to finish this book amid my daily hustle and bustle lately, to be frank. Like my eyes immediately shutting down only before finishing a chapter. Not because the book itself I believe, as actually this book is quite interesting, it's kinda required reading for the amateur economist, I'm not even amateur, I'm an ignorant maybe hha, seeking a nuanced understanding of what makes some countries grow and some to stagnate. It's fascinating to follow Ruchir Sharma's thought about economic growth, how population does really matter in certain point, how businesses grow and fall in that and that political reform, crisis, and resentment, and how some forces in post-crisis age has turned the world upside down, replacing fast growth with slow growth and political calm with revolt. Though, in the first part, I was quite surprised reading his statement saying, "in general, however, if a country focuses on growth, development will follow"...which is for meee I barely say "yes, I agree", and then he said as well about how education won't give contribution for short or medium term of development goal, which I can't deny, yes it won't, but still I don't think education can be less important than occasional and probably unsustained economic growth. So ya, maybe it's just because I'm not an economist. Hhe. Well, at the end I can understand why some parts are surprisingly extreme for me, as this book mention that all being said is merely about capturing an idea to forecast economic trends not too far into the future, like it's only for 5 to 10 years forecasting, as this world is always impermanent, the election cycle, too, runs for around five years on average, and it can usher in reform-minded leaders with the potential to shake up stagnant economies. As a result, any forecast that looks beyond the next cycle or two, like recent talk of the coming Asian or African century, is less nonsense My most favourite part in this book is a chapter about geographic sweet spot with an intriguing story about Dubai and its economic boost #books #bookreview #theriseandfallofnations #ruchirsharma #reading #readinglist #readingrecommendation
