Decent print reference collections of yore would have a special paper-based "perpetual" calendar so patrons - or, more often I suspect, the library staff assisting them - could look up which day of the week a given date fell on (or will fall on) in any year, past or future.

Good ones would also, at minimum, provide basic information describing steps for conversion from one calendar system (such as Julian and Gregorian) to another, but since the perpetual calendar itself only requires a few dozen pages at most many pubilshers adopted a "time and date almanac" approach to add value with all manner of trivia. This is what made them such a great reference tool.

They aren't all on paper, of course... the image above from the Wikemedia Commons shows a pocket calendar capable of producing a monthly calendar within a 50-year time span.

If you need one (as I did today) but find that your library weeded their perpetual calendar some time ago, look online. 

VPcalendar.net has worked well for me in basic situations. It has a perpetual calendar covering the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries, plus a list of leap years and other assorted triva. It isn't database-driven; just a set of flat pages and tables, rather like the old books. This may seem a bit clunky, but one advantage here is that you can see the "mechanics" of how perpetual calendars work, with each past or future year across the centuries linking to one of only a few possible calendars.

timeanddate.com, by contrast, is a full-featured site - timezones, world clocks, sunrise/sunset & moon phases, etc. - with all kinds of interactive tools for generating calendars. To create a calendar for any year simply enter the year and select your country (the output includes a list of major holidays tailored regionally). Once the calendar appears there are a number of formatting options to ensure the calendar's design meets your needs, whatever they may be.
