Hopefully we’ll get an audiobook of it too, and possibly with Beagle reading it. Ever since he lost his rights, pretty much all of his audiobooks have been taken down from the likes of Amazon’s Audible (so yes, see if you can get them from your local library). Beagle’s rendition of The Last Unicorn is not only fantastic, it contains his melodies for all the songs in the book.

after learning Ursula’s character design was based on a (truly splendid) drag queen, I just sort of got lazy with assuming she would always be the most salacious disney villain.

I don’t think I’d call Ursula especially salacious–she makes jokes implying that men only want sex, and she moves like a theatre major at the grocery store with their friends, but I wouldn’t describe her as horny.

I guess Frollo has a whole song about how horny he is, and both Gaston and Jafar also have “marry the heroine but in an evil way” as motives.

I made an alignment chart because I needed something to occupy my time. no one but frollo is on the “conflicted” bar because no other disney villain is anything but 100% comfortable with their sexuality and that’s that about that. gaston is evilly sexy, not evilly horny, because the only person gaston is horny for is gaston.

three romanian authors to read with ur dracula daily

dracula is an orientalist text conceived at the height of british empire, grounded in distortions of a region that stoker never visited. sadly (and unsurprisingly) i found very few romanian authors who have been translated into english online, so here’s a meagre list of recs:

1. luminița cioabă

romanian roma author, famous in romania as the daughter of bulibasha (the king of the roma nation), she forged her own path as a writer of short stories in the oral roma tradition which portray in vivid detail the history of the roma people of romania

2. marin sorescu

3. paul celan

jewish romanian poet from bucovina. i recommend this beautiful essay by ilya kaminsky, who like celan was forced to flee eastern europe due to antisemitism, deconstructing various translators’ attempts to adapt celan’s texts and experience of the holocaust. these are all poems from a 1971 poetry collection

I'm trying to work out a good way to tell tumblr i made a 2 player game about dracula and jonathan harker cohabitating awkwardly without making it sound like a grift. i truly just think it would be appreciated here at this particular moment in time.

I love Sweet Pea so much, I never realised how gosh darn CUTE hyenas could be, but now I'm hooked

thank you very much!! I'm so glad my art has helped you see how cute hyenas are! I honestly think that every animal can be cute in its own way, even ones with complicated insect faces or even no faces at all, but I feel like hyenas are very conventionally cute if you open your heart to them. I did this sketch (from photo reference) highlighting just some of the cute things about spotted hyenas:

The most well-known stylized hyena designs, the ones from The Lion King (which I've loved my whole life, don't get me wrong), work really hard to make them look villainous and threatening through choices like giving them broad, sly grins full of sharp teeth and desaturating their fur from tawny yellow and ginger to gray and black. That look is iconic and all, and I've seen plenty of other hyena character designs lean that way, but I think a design could easily go just as far in the other direction and be almost teddy-bear cute-- it's all about the personality the design is meant to convey and what features are exaggerated to do it. In real life, spotted hyenas just look like fuzzy normal guys, just as cute as any other large carnivorous mammal:

On a related note, that's also part of why I like drawing animals from photo reference rather than from stylized artwork. I love looking at other people's art for inspiration, but I also like being able to ultimately pick for myself how to stylize an animal character's looks, rather than copying someone else's choices. Plus, using references means getting to look at cute animal pictures while drawing, and who wouldn't want that?

Also, as one last thing, I think it's really important when considering hyenas' inherent cuteness to know that they can tuck in all their limbs and loaf like cats:
