Real Color

-Because of availability, black and white photography became the norm despite  the lack of color - “Too artificial to be real.” “Too literal to be artistic.” At the time, there was no winning for color photography.

- “Photography’s basic truth value is still a common premise (albeit one subject to more skepticism now than in the past).” DIGITAL REVOLUTION. People don’t trust photographs anymore because of the presence of digital manipulation.

-Alfred Stieglitz praised Edward Steichen’s autochromes  and cited them as proof that artistic results could be achieved with color. 1907: Waaaay before William Eggleston and co.

-Companies in the 1920s were beginning to color their products, increasing demand for color photographic images for advertising.

- “The implication was that color photography could be an artistic medium, a subtle argument against the common assumption that it was only of commercial utility. By associating Adams and Weston with color materials, Kodak suggested the aesthetic viability of color photographs.” It was a good attempt to market color photography for artists, but also we have to keep in mind that Adams and Weston brushed off the works and didn’t really think they were as artistic or well done as their classic black and white ones.

-There were color FSA slides and no one knew about them or published them what?

- “Documentary fostered the impression that color was of little consequence to thirties culture, that color had faded with other reckless illusions that characterized an earlier era of prosperity.” Because the carefree behavior of people in the 1920s caused the Depression, people renounced the things that they were doing. Color photography got roped into those behaviors.

-Color photography was considered a derivative of painting and some photographers used abstraction and nondocumentary subjects to carry on with this association. Not all though.

-Part of the reason why color photography was not considered artistic was because the artist did not have as much control over the development of film, prints, etc.!!!!!!! They did not have the ability to work hands-on with it in the darkroom!!!!
