i cannot believe what jojo siwa did the the public conscience with her new (probably stolen) widely shitted-on album with that makeup like now everyone is commenting on photos of like real metalheads wearing corpse paint and real goths in their full goth makeup commenting saying shit like "jojo siwa after getting exiled to siberia" and "why he be looking like jojo siwa" and "jojo siwa is that you" BITING SCREAMING THRASHING

I’m not sorry, but if you just wear black and call yourself a goth, you’re not goth. You have to like our music to be goth and that’s it. There is no dress code. Our fashion stems from how we feel and wanna present ourselves, not the other way around. The music stems from the Punk scene and we’re inherently anti-conformist and anti-capitalist.

If you wear black and don’t like goth music, any of it, then you’re just alternative.

still thinkng about how when Wednesday came out people hated on the dance scene song, when they clearly do not know that The Cramps are a parent of goth and is one of the first recognizable proto-goth bands

gatekeepers will say that, because music inspired the gothic fashion, you MUST listen to goth music in order to be goth - even that you aren't goth if you don't listen to the right music

but oh no no no no it's much deeper than that, the music is just barely scratching the surface

see it goes like this

gothic germanic vikings -> gothic architecture -> gothic literature -> gothic movies -> gothic music -> gothic fashion

it did not start with the music, nor did it start with the fashion and at the heart of Goth is using dark and mysterious aspects of history as inspiration for the creation of new gothic works and gothic expression, as this is what each stage of Goth has, fundamentally

there is much to appreciate from historical gothic creations, it's just not exclusive to the music and fashion

it is good to get a deep understanding of goth history and delve into gothic works so that you don't create a shallow interpretation, but there is no initiation process for being goth, the basics is just having an appreciation for things that are dark, that is what makes one goth

just as a rule of thumb if you are goth, just try not to stir aggression in the goth community bc it makes us look bad and elitist
