Tagged by @choking-on-roses. For multi-chapter fics I’m gonna post the first sentence from the first chapter, even though that means some are not technically in order. I probably don’t have enough multichapter fics for that to be a big deal. ANYWAY, most to least recent on ao3. .
1. Ai, That’s Gay: Rin’s not really sure when he realized he was gay.
2. Move In Day: Kyoya couldn’t believe he had let Tamaki talk him into this.
3. Sei’s Modeling Job: Aichirou tried not to blush as he entered the brothel, La Rosa Verita.
4. Why, Rei-chan?: “I should get going,” Rei said as he started to pick up his bag.
5. Nagisa’s Present: For once Rei was the one with plenty of left-over energy while Nagisa was about to pass out.
6. It Isn’t in the Stars: “Hey, Rei-chaaaaan,” Nagisa said, sliding down the bench to sit closer to Rei.
7. Nagisa Needs a New Years Kiss: Twenty-one new years, zero new year kisses.
8. Hide In Plain Sight: Rei covered his yawn as he passed through the sliding doors into the main lobby of the airport.
9. Two Hands, Two Views: On the train home Nagisa fell asleep on my shoulder, as usual.
10. Mistletoe Mischief: Raven awoke, as usual, to the sound of birds chirping, swiftly followed by her roommate singing along.
11. Carnevale: Nagisa stretched out in bed as the morning sun lit up his room via his open window.
12. Three Dads: “Dada-RinRin!” Mei ran up to Rin.
13. RinReiGisa Stuff and Fluff: To celebrate the end of the swim season the Iwatobi team was spending the night at Haru’s house.
14. Life Was Awesome: Nagisa loved his roommate Rei.
15. Both Is Good: “Fuck.”
16. How Dare You: “How could you lose your phone?” Rin yelled.
17. Rosemary and Penguins: Kou and Nagisa were sitting on her couch, watching some stupid crime show or other.
18. Rinba: “Run away and never return.”
19. Rin’s Snapchat Mishap: After class on his birthday Rin dropped his bag next to his bed and sprawled out on the mattress.
20. Safe Word: Iwatobi: Rei couldn’t see anything through the blindfold.
This took a long time because I kept stopping to read more of the story. And notice a million typos. And then read comments.
Anyway, I don’t start nearly as many fics with quotes as I thought I did. 15 is definitely the best opening line, but 18 is a Lion King quote, so... I was surprised to see 9 and 10 both include “as usual,” which I don’t feel like I use that often, but maybe I do? I do enjoy using “as” or “while” or just a comma to indicate multitasking, which you can see in a lot of these.
I’m not really seeing any major changes from beginning to end. Maybe if I had separated by chapter I would see something. Overall I think I’m pretty good at opening lines. Title and exposition and the rest of the damn story not so much. But I like my opening lines.
