#ReallyRadio - 5 MUSIC DOCUMENTARIES THAT WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE
STILL BILL
I consider Bill withers to be one of the greatest song writers of our time. Despite also being an incredibly soulful performer and musician he decided to hang up the mic in 1985 and walked away from performing and recording. 'Still Bill' explores the thought process behind the Virgina born brother' just simply trying to grow old gracefully.
20 FEET FROM STARDOM
Ever wonder what it would be like to be sing in front of thousands in a sold out arena? These women do almost everyday, just slightly more upstage and off centre. Backing vocalists are the focus of this moving film. The performers discuss chasing solo careers of their own and what it's like ghost vocalising on the biggest pop hits throughout the years without even being granted a credit. With cameo accounts from Mick Jagger, Stevie Wonder, Sting and more this one scooped best documentary feature at the Oscars and it's easy to see why.
LIVING IN THE MATERIAL WORLD
Bringing forth archive footage of the most successful band ever, along with stories from loved ones and the remaining members, this stunning piece of film brings light to George Harrsion known by many as 'the quiet Beatle'. From the early days of Beatlemania through psychedelic years director Martin Scorcese provides us with touching insight into the spiritual, mystical nature of the man who penned 'Something' as he copes with life on the road and catching up with John and Paul as a respected songwriter.
PRESSPAUSEPLAY
Not strictly speaking a music specific documentary PressPausePlay explores the effect of the current digital revolution and how the increased access to professional production technology to the masses affects output in various creative industries. Are we experiencing an artistic renaissance or slipping into an age of mediocrity?
WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES IT MAKE?
The RedBull Music Academy is a springboard for new musical talent providing access studios and mentorship. I remember when my old flatmate sat at his desk for a week writing his application for RBMA and then didn't even send it in because he didn't think it was good enough. It's a big deal. This piece follows some of the succesful participants on a musical journey to the NYC headquarters to meet their peers for a music creation camp. Something for lovers of all styles and genres and definitely an incentive to send in that form!
Yesterday I attended an incredible hand sign painting workshop at The Blackhorse Workshop, taught by MJO Signwriting, and curated by We Made That. 4 hours of brush techniques and gold leaf gilding.
