🤔 Was it even possible for an African-American woman to become a doctor in Toronto at the turn of the century? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Dr. Rebecca James played by the stunning Mouna Traoré @cbcmurdoch is one of my favourite characters of all time. She begins her journey as a frightened immigrant and goes on to become a confident doctor who finds true love and makes her dreams come true. I did not believe that any character could fill the hole in my heart when Dr. Emily Grace left, but Miss James did. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Then she left, too. 😭😭😭😭 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I guess that’s life. People grow and change and go off to pursue their dreams. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I’m an immigrant woman. I came to Canada with my parents when I was eleven and though I am white, intelligent, and more privileged than most, I’ve struggled with real life for as long as I can remember. It may be why I turned to art and writing — creating worlds that make sense to me, since the one I’m living in does not. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Was it even possible for an African American immigrant to make it in Canada at the turn of the century? Googling, I’m given the name of Emily Stowe who did become a doctor, but is she African-American? I’ll have to do more research. 🤗 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ To be honest, I do not understand racism, or any ism that judges people on their appearance, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. I hope I never do. I still remember being shocked when I my supervisor told me to follow some teenagers around because they were black when I worked in the video store. I didn’t even understand what he was saying, until he just said it bluntly to my face. 😔 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Total Painting Time: 2:04:18 Photo Source: IMDb To complete the challenge, next up is Dr. Emily Grace. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #rebeccajames #murdochmysteries #mounatraore #milifayart #portrait #timelapseart #toonme #toonmechallenge #digitalpainting #portraitpainting #characterportrait (at Toronto C•A•N•A•D•A) https://www.instagram.com/p/B-fAO6RjNZT/?igshid=1roghnkxwx59o
