Rebels on Pointe (2017)
We talked to Cuban-born dancer Carlos Hupoy about taking part in the documentary 'Rebels on Pointe.'
Can I please get a list of lgbt movie recommendations?
Hi! From 2017, I have seen surprisingly few LGBT movies. Here are the new releases from the past year that I have seen:
“God’s Own Country” is set in present northern England, about a man who falls in love with a Romanian farm laborer. It’s sweet in portraying the emotional struggles of love.
“Call Me by Your Name” is set somewhere in northern Italy in the 1980s, about two who fall in love for a short summer fling with somewhat tragic consequences. But it’s one of the most tender and heartfelt movies to deal with the subject, and one of the best movies of the year. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.
“Battle of the Sexes” is mostly about Billie Jean King and her world-famous tennis match with self-professed male chauvinist Bobby Riggs. However, a side plot is her relationship with a woman in heavily homophobic 1970s America. It deals awkwardly with her shame, guilt, struggles as she keeps her relationship despite being married to a man and having a huge public presence.
“Rebels on Pointe” is a delightful documentary about the all-LGBT ballet company Les Ballets Trockadero. It covers the history of the company, the current scope of performances, but also focuses heavily on the individuals in the group, and their issues with family, being out, being married, aging, outreach, etc. It’s a sweet and touching documentary.

Jesus Christ Superstar: Live Area Tour (2012)
This week I was on the search for an audition song, so I spent quite a lot of time watching bootlegs and pro-shoots of various shows and this was by far my favourite. This is by far my favourite version of JCS and I can’t see myself going back to the ‘traditional’ version after seeing a modernised version starring Tim Minchin as Judas; though I do want to watch the version with John Legend... Also, my rating of this is purely based off of production value and doesn’t consider the cinematography as that isn’t the reason anyone watches a recording of a concert.

Oh my god, this is SO boring. Though I am currently debating between two songs from this show for my back-up audition song, this movie was not my cup of tea. This film doesn’t even come close to capturing the essence of the musical it is based off of, though I did somewhat enjoy the change they made to the ending that wouldn’t have come across as clearly on stage.

Rebels On Pointe
This is a fairly average documentary, but I mainly want to focus on it’s subject. I had no idea this ballet company existed before I watched this, and not it makes me want to see more male-centric ballet shows, or more masculine roles in ballet full stop. Also, please note that I am not highly educated in the world of ballet, I only just stared my foray into the world of ballet performances recently.

Tutus and testosterone, blush-pink ballet pumps, fierce false eyelashes and prima ballerina attitude – it can only be “The Trocks”!
On Monday 30 July, as part of the official programme of events for Belfast Pride 2018, Rebels On Pointe, will premier at the Grand Opera House. Rebels on Pointe is the first-ever feature documentary celebrating the world famous Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo.
