We Hope to Build With Those Who Want to Change Everything

Across the country students are participating in struggles on and off campus. We are in the streets demanding an end to racist police murders and fighting for the rights of immigrants to live with dignity. We are standing in solidarity with the people of Palestine and organizing to put the brakes on global warming. We are resisting sexual assault and facing down racist, sexist, homophobic, and transphobic bigotry. We are marching for a living wage and supporting adjuncts and campus workers fighting for the right to unionize. We are agitating against mass incarceration and speaking out against the surveillance state.

We are searching for the ways to build movements that can free us all.

Students are on the rise. More and more of us are coming to the realization that the individual issues we have been fighting over are each only part of a larger problem. The conclusion we are arriving at seems more and more transparent, obvious, and obtrusive. Whatever issue we wage a fight around, the problem is a system: the very structures and foundations of the society we live in.  While we struggle for this or that demand, we realize that the only real solution to the urgent problems facing the world is a revolutionary one: We need to replace this world with something better - a world based on cooperation and solidarity rather than oppression and exploitation.  Students can't do this alone, but we can certainly play our role. We can define our vision and contribute to a struggle much larger than ourselves.

The Revolutionary Student Media Project seeks to bring together students from different communities, different campuses, different struggles, different organizations, and different perspectives to share our experiences through various forms of media, art, and struggle. In the process, we seek to develop a common understanding of the system we are up against and what it will take to overthrow it.

We are initiating a process. We intend to co-conspire a project that can be a political center for revolutionary students around the country. We want to build a revolutionary student movement and we want your help.

Our first major project will be a print publication targeted at students for mass distribution on campuses across the country at the beginning of the school year in the Fall of 2015. Our working idea is to produce a disorientation manual which will bring together reports on student involvement in struggles on different campuses and around the country; national overviews of ongoing campaigns; examinations of the restructuring of higher education and its place within a larger system; histories of student participation in revolutionary activity in the U.S. and around the world; reviews of revolutionary books, movies, and music; links to valuable resources and more.  We are committed to producing a visually striking, professional quality manual and an accompanying website aimed at reaching the thousands of students across the country who, we are convinced, are hungry for a project like this.

We need you.

We need revolutionary minded student writers and reporters, investigators and researchers, reviewers, fact-checkers and editors, photographers, cartoonists, artists, and designers to help us produce a disorientation manual that will be able to speak to students on campuses all across the country. We will also need distributors willing and eager to pass the disorientation manual out on their campuses (and even neighboring campuses) at the beginning of the new school year.

We need honest leaders and bold people to tell their stories and to think strategically with us about going forward and making real gains in this struggle for the liberation of humanity in it's entirety.

The First Death

We received the following letter just this morning. We deeply morn the loss of ‘Guero,’ the first to die in the hunger strike.  He died for more than himself. Killed by his conditions, by this system, we remember him.

It is with a heavy heavy heart I bring you the news that a hunger striker housed in 4B-3L of the Corcorcan SHU, named Billy Michael Sell, more commonly known as ‘Guero’, died on Monday the 22nd of July. I spoke with several prisoners today about him, some that knew him very well and they were very somber and concerned. The prisoners say, “Billy died because of the Hunger Strike". That he was “strong, was a good person, a good soldier" and that the allegations by CDCR that this was a suicide are, “completely out of character for him and that he wasn’t like that" Several guys stated, “No one believes he killed himself" He was supposedly going without water as well as food and may have had other health issues, that is unknown. As stated below, Guero is reported to have started asking for medical attention around the 15th or 16th of July, in which he did not receive and died 4 days later. He is from Riverside but none of the guys knew how to contact his family.

Here is more about him from a letter drafted for the Statewide Medical Executive, Dr. Tharrett:

"We have confirmed that CDCR claims that Billy Sell, P41250, age 32, housed in the Security Housing Unit, allegedly took his own life on July 22, 2013. 

According to information we have gathered, Mr. Sell was not under care for mental illness at the time of his death.  According to other inmates near his cell, he had been requesting medical attention “for a few days" and had not received it by July 22.  The other prisoners who knew Billy confirmed that he was on the hunger strike and said it would be very strange and uncharacteristic of him to take his own life.  Inmates said that the guards reported he had hanged himself.  The other prisoners doubt the veracity of that story. 

So the time has come that we were dreading but also trying to prepare for. No matter how Billy died, his life mattered and I believe that we as a coalition need to respond. I would like to suggest that we do some kind of vigil/press conference/rally at the CDCR building in Oakland, unless that was already being organized. Of course we can talk about this at Mondays meeting but I really think we should start thinking of ideas now.

I know that the mediation team is preparing look into further investigation on the legal front, so we will see what happens with that. In the meantime of any of your loved ones/correspondents/etc. are housed at Corcoran in 4B-3L and they may have some info about this, have known him, heard him requesting medical attention, please let us know.
