The presumption that Republicans are better than Democrats at economic stewardship is a longstanding myth that must be debunked. For all Americans who care about their and their children’s future, the right choice this November could not be clearer.

Just a reminder: Democrats are better for the economy.

Economist Nouriel Roubini tells us:

US recessions almost always occur under Republican administrations – a pattern that has persisted since our book appeared. The recessions of 1970, 1980-82, 1990, 2001, 2008-09, and, now, 2020 all occurred when a Republican was in the White House (with the exception of the double-dip recession of 1980-82, which started under Jimmy Carter but continued under Ronald Reagan). Likewise, the Great Recession of 2008-09 was triggered by the 2007-08 financial crisis, which also occurred on the GOP’s watch.

This tendency is not random: loose regulatory policies lead to financial crises and recessions. And, compounding matters, Republicans consistently pursue reckless fiscal policies, spending as much as Democrats do, but refusing to raise taxes to make up for the resulting budget shortfalls.

I previously posted the following list of recessions before Trump wrecked the economy this year with his catastrophic response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

^^^ We can add an additional RED star to that list for 2020 and update the numbers to say that 10 of the 12 recessions since the end of World War II were caused by Republicans -- that’s 83.33%. That doesn’t include the Great Depression caused by Republican President Herbert “Prosperity is just around the corner“ Hoover.

The Great Recession and financial collapse was caused by George W. Bush in 2007-2008. Barack Obama spent his first couple of years in office trying to get the US out of that economic ditch and eventually got the US back on a sound footing. Donald Trump has been attempting to steal credit for that recovery the way he cheats on his taxes.

There’s a pattern. Republican greed and incompetence are responsible for most economic downturns. Democrats are then elected to clean up the Republican mess. Republicans then blame Democrats for not cleaning up the GOP economic disaster fast enough. Republicans rely on Americans having short memories and short attention spans.

It’s time to banish the fallacy about the GOP allegedly being good for the economy. Their wealth, often inherited or made by exploiting workers, cheating on taxes, or degrading the environment, will not “trickle down” to you. Republicans do not create wealth, they redistribute it in their favor while maybe tossing you a few crumbs if you’re lucky.

My mother is a strong democrat and my father a strong republican they each only go maverick on a few issues. I’m the only one of my siblings who care about politics. I’m the only one to have a political party out of my siblings.
