But even better: almost every male character is fucking lame. We've got a genderswapped version of the runaway princess trope! A loser man afraid of his grandma! A little guy scared of his own powers and responsibilities! The only male character in this series who ISN'T lame as hell is the GAY DILF! GENDER ROLES? DESTROYED 💥💥💥💥 also there's fantasy racism and it's handled fine.

Do you want a dramatic historical thriller with murders, romances, and intrigue? The protagonist has a super-queer-coded relationship with his best friend, and it features women in prominent roles while still being historically accurate! It also has some absolutely heartbreaking scenes for those of us who like angst, and an adorable dog sidekick for those of us who need something a little lighter! Reading this really made me feel like I learned something about the world - though it's very fun, too!
