Using Recap - We are fortunate in that Autodesk has supported the UDBS with many of its projects and endeavors over the years. One of the many benefits is being able to learn and use some of their software packages that we normally wouldn’t use in our design process. In some of the previous posts, my colleagues and I have shown images from the day we gathered data using the FARO Lidar Terrestrial scanner. After getting all the data, we used Recap 360, an Autodesk product, to piece together several scans to create an accurate 3D point cloud of the Lobby space at 7800 Susquehanna. This video is a walk-through of the space in Recap after the scans have been registered to one another. In the model, you can see people that got caught by the scanner. This will be cleaned up for Virtual Reality use. We hope to use the model, in collaboration with the IDeATe students, to be able to better tell the narrative of the First Course Kiosk.
Looking Back. In early december we were on site at the August Wilson House where Matt from #SheltonDesign/Build carefully deconstructed a few pieces from the 100-year-old storefront which previously housed Bella’s Market during the time that August Wilson lived there. In this video, Matt removes one of the ornamental colonnette capital pieces. We will be testing the traditional restoration method of “dip-and-strip” to see if this is a viable process that can be applied to the other colonnette capitals in order to restore them. Another more advanced method we will also be testing is to use photogrammetry based 3D -scanning to obtain a digital model of the capital element. We will use the 3D model as the platform for digital fabrication methods to precisely reproduce the capitals.
Leica Geosystems and Autodesk finally broke the suspense, and what they have unveiled is truly amazing! The Apple of Laser Scanners is finally here which can help you scan indoors with ease! Meet BLK360 &
Great tutorial of Autodesk’s Recap 360 lead by Marc Zinck. The program allows us to manipulate, edit, and take measurements directly from the terrestrial Faro scans and the UAV scans of the August Wilson House.
Both use a combination of photogrammetry and lidar scanning. Photogrammetry uses a compilation of images to piece together a 3D model. While lidar scanning utilizes lasers to measure the intensity of the light bouncing off of different materials.
In this video Marc is showing us how to isolate certain scan data while in the color mode that shows the intensity from the lidar scan.
