Recipe #15 - Big Mike's Shaved Ice
Review: Haha this isn't the right time of year for this dish at all. Oh well, still yummy! This is yet another recipe that I've never attempted before.
The syrup was definitely the easiest and most fun part of this recipe, it smelled really good too! It was basically just fruit and sugar and all I had to do was chop, boil, and strain them into a syrup. The only difference is that the pineapple syrup had to cook slightly longer.
The ice itself was a bit of a failure because my tools would not cooperate. I wanted to get the ice super fine like snow but in the end I could only get relatively small chunks. Because of this, the syrup wasn't absorbed by the ice like it should have been. It was more of a slushie than shaved ice. Luckily, this only messed up the aesthetic appeal and not the taste.
I have a lot of syrup left over and I'm going to try pouring it over ice cream :)
Recipe:
Here is my source
1 1/2 cup strawberries
2 tbsp lime juice
3/4 cup water
3/4 cup sugar
1 1/2 cups pineapple
The recipe on my source page suggests eating the shaved ice with Sweetened Condensed Milk. I tried doing this and it was tasty but a little weird. I felt it didn't really mesh well with the texture of the ice. However, if I had been able to chop the ice finer, it might have worked. So, if you try out this recipe, it's up to you whether or not you want to add this topping. See you at Recipe 16! :D
Recipe Number 15 - Big Mike's Shaved Ice
Big Mike's Shaved Ice was made in honor of the Hawaii-style Nancy Drew game Creature of Kapu Cave. In this game, one of the Hardy boys has to guess what Big Mike's favorite flavor of shaved ice is in order to move the plot forward.
This recipe was a struggle because I didn't have the proper equipment. I used a handheld stick blender and a Magic Bullet that I borrowed from my friend. Neither of which work particularly well with ice.
In the end I think it turned out pretty well. I made strawberry and pineapple syrup from scratch and they both tasted delicious. Unfortunately, the pineapple syrup ended up being clear so I had to go with just strawberry syrup for the photo.
Now if only I could get my hands on a shaved ice machine :)
