Sleep did not come easily to a woman who was about to lose her sons and brother for however many months at a time. Instead, Dis paced the length of her home, gnawing anxiously on her thumbnail, trying not to let the thoughts become too prominent.
Why had she let them do it?
Yet, upon seeing a figure in the doorway, the Dwarven woman tried to force a smile, although it did not quite reach her eyes.
"Ready for tomorrow?"

When Kili had entered the small cellar beneath the apothecary he hadn't exactly had it in his mind that he would be trying any of the countless bottles that lined the wall. He hadn't intended to do anything other than find what the old man had asked for, nothing more nothing less. But what he hadn't anticipated was feeling as if there were something beneath his skin tugging him forward the moment he'd placed his foot on the floor. It was a relentless pressure that he felt in his stomach that drew him further into the room like a fish hooked on a line and he could not ignore it.
Unthinkingly he had made his way toward the darkest corner of the room and with every step forward the pull only strengthened. It was so strange and yet at the same time he wasn't afraid. Before he truly knew what had happened he'd reached the corner and as he looked down he realized that there was a bottle already in his hands. It was very plain, the glass dark with only the sloshing of the liquid inside the bottle against the sides as he moved it giving it away that he was filled. In seemingly the blink of an eye his hand had moved and the bottle was unstopped, and then it was at his lips. He couldn't bring himself to truly be worried about what was occurring and yet at the back of his mind he realized that there was an undeniable nagging sensation that something was wrong. He couldn't stop himself from swallowing as he poured the contents of the bottle into his mouth and all at once the room seemed to spin around him like a top. Everything came into such sharp focus that he almost felt as if he could see each and every grain of dirt on the floor and he could smell the dampness of the earth, but then there was nothing but darkness.

He was shaking. The water of the lake had been ice cold, the air was no less cold. The people were in clear distress. He couldn't see many. There were so few tents set up. It had taken him so long to swim to the shore because of how cold it was. He was probably blue already. Then he spotted one of the dwarves, the injured ones. "Dwarf! My children, have you seen them? I saw my house burn. Have you seen them? Where is your brother?"

When Kili comes in, he brings with him the smell of earth, of forest, of soil. Fili glances up, his head cocked to the side. "Been working on your arrows?"
