Two lonely souls

To say Erin Gilbert was uptight and neurotic would be an understatement. The particle physics professor at Columbia University had spent most her life fighting for recognition, craving validation and approval from her superiors and her parents, a poor substitute for never being held enough as a child.

(Not that she’d ever admit that last part, of course)

She’d spent her entire life working hard, each milestone just another stepping stone to something bigger and better. Graduating High School? Just the next step to her degree. Getting her degree? Just the next step to her doctorate. Getting her doctorate? Just a next step towards getting tenure. Getting tenure...

Well, that was just a requirement for that coveted job security. The world of academia was harsh, and she’d find herself another goal to work towards sooner rather than later. Tenure first.

Which was how she found herself arriving at her office at 8:30AM, surprised to already find someone waiting there for her. “I- I’m sorry... Who are you?”

          The hiss of the airlock door signaled the commander’s entrance, although it wasn’t immediately clear upon entering where the engineer was. Shepard took a step towards a weapon bench, eyes scanning the various shelving units of lethal contraptions, inventions, and mechanical parts. The other woman had to be around here somewhere-- it wasn’t like the armory was a particularly large quarter. “Holtzmann?” She called out and stood, waiting for a response to indicate she wasn’t standing there talking to herself. 

          Various pieces of metal were strewn across the table, and Shepard picked up what appeared to be a modified heat sync (although she couldn’t be sure if that was what it was anymore). She placed it back where she’d found it, certain that the other woman would notice if she broke something. “You’d better come find me before I accidentally disrupt our mass effect field and the entire ship explodes or something.”

The Library

Starter for @holtzoween. 

          The library’s after-school program was supposed to give Harleen a safe place to spend her afternoons, her grandmother had said. She’d called the school to have Harleen’s name added to their roster, and now here she was. Anything for Bubbi. In reality, it was just a band of misfits bussed over from various schools and dumped in a building of old books and even older computers, left mostly unsupervised. The difference between coming here or going home was that her mother wasn’t here, and that was a considerable bonus over the supply of books or really any other benefit the Brooklyn public library had to offer. That and it was blessedly quiet. 

          The best place in the whole building was over near the classics section, far away from the romance novel soccer mom supply and the thrillers that made some middle class men think they were interesting. Dan Brown, gag her with a spoon. It was quietest here, and there was a nice window with a wide sill she could climb onto. Sunlight was decent for a few hours until it started to set, but at that point, she had to head home anyway. Make sure Tammy Lynne hadn’t OD’ed that day, scavenge for dinner and meet someone about a car. There were no plans for tonight though, and Harleen hated that. She’d be forced to do homework out of sheer boredom. Maybe she’d get a last minute text message. It was never too late to plan a boost, right?

   Looking at the gutted pumpkin, she couldn’t help but be a little intrigued by the ‘nonconventional’ means used to clear it out. if it works, it works was the only thing that mattered in the being’s head. “I think the solar system would be really cool but so would your own face. I’m leaning towards the solar system personally though.”

          She leaned back, lips pressed together insistently. “If ya think I’m bossy now, maybe ya should try’n find out.” That was a definitive no. Hard pass. “I’m bored. Hey, show me that ghost bear trap. Y’know, for the ghost bears.” There had to be ghost bears-- after the things Holtzy had shown her, anything was possible. “Question: do ghost bears evah maul like, ghost people? Like the ghosts of dead campahs who got too close to their ghost cave? Follow up: if they do, how do people ghosts defend themselves? Are there ghost shotguns? Have ya made one?” She scooched closer to Holtzman, her hip touching the woman’s arm as she leaned over her work, trying to decide what it was she was building. Probably a photon something. Probably to catch or fight ghosts. 

          Holtzmann smelled good. Like some kind of fuel that wasn’t quite gasoline but smelled sweeter, and a hint of smoke like something was in the toaster too long. Bleached fingers moved to pull the engineer’s bangs out of her face.
