I won the story of Freya and Odr at that camp’s raffle. . I ended up co-teaching my first Reclaiming class with one of the authors (Copper). 2010 — Rites of Passage with the story of Freya and Odr. . Three years since I stepped into the space of knowing and unknowing and committed and dissolved and surrendered and re-emerged different more vulnerable more in love more aware of grace and the tenuousness of life and death i remember it all and i remember little and i am still becoming the emerging (Before that day, a beloved sent me this poem. And I read it on this anniversary every year.) “You and I have spoken all these words, but as for the way we have to go, words are no preparation. There is no getting ready, other than grace. My faults have stayed hidden. One might call that a preparation! I have one small drop of knowing in my soul. Let it dissolve in your ocean. There are so many threats to it. Inside each of us, there’s continual autumn. Our leaves fall and are blown out over the water. A crow sits in the blackened limbs and talks about what’s gone. Then, your generosity returns: spring, moisture, intelligence, the scent of hyacinth and rose and cypress….. Weep and then smile. Don’t pretend to know something you haven’t experienced. There’s a necessary dying, and … breathing again. Very little grows on jagged rock. Be ground. Be crumbled, so wildflowers will come up where you are. You’ve been story for too many years. As the winter gathers in and the spinning of summer slows I find myself reflecting again. What is the life I truly desire... And how do I create that future? What do I choose? I wonder what makes now different from all the times I've done this before, what about this time means I will step forward? For everything I list that I want I ask myself "why do I resist this?" I notice my responses. I acknowledge my self. I make kala, transforming my blocks. I strengthen myself with iron, and find compassion in pearl. Late night doodling as divination and spell :) Midnight *is* the witching hour, of course! I journal to process things, sometimes it involves many, many words, other times the paint shows me something I might otherwise have missed. Often my art begins as divination and ends as spellwork, especially in my private art journals where one page unfolds into another, from seeking clarity to moving forwards.
