Lecture 14: Here’s something fun: Casey Kasem, the most popular disc jockey of the 1970s – thanks to his massively popular American Top 40 – runs through the top forty songs of America’s bicentennial year, 1976 – for the week of August 21. Kasem was known for his soothing radio voice and distinctly schmaltzy style, which included long-distance dedications (i.e., people living across the country from each other dedicating songs to each other on his show) and a steady stream of rock music trivia. Kasem’s AT40 was the most popular syndicated radio show in the United States from the time it went on the air in 1970 until Kasem’s final broadcast 18 years later, on August 6, 1988. More than any television program or record sales, it helped bring “pop music” to millions of people for nearly 20 years.
