MobileMovieMaking Tip #68. USE AN EXTERNAL MICROPHONE Bad audio will sink even a beautifully shot video. Or to put it positively, getting clear sound is a must when shooting in genres where voice matters. Examples include interviews, music videos, talking-head commercials, and vlogs. If you’re shooting in an absolutely quiet location and if you’re within a few feet of your subject, you might get acceptable sound from your mobile’s built-in microphone. But the odds for getting quality audio greatly improve if you use an external microphone. You can spend hundreds of dollars for add-on mics—especially wireless. But Rode’s affordable Smartlav (for about $80) gets remarkable results, and it’s easy to use. In our interviews at MobileMovieMaking Magazine, many prize-winning mobile moviemakers recommend this piece of gear from @rodemic. When shooting outdoors, you might want to add a “dead cat,” a microphone windshield (about $25) . It fits over the microphone and cuts down on the annoying sound of wind hitting the mic. (Rode’s dead cats are not made from cats, and the fur is artificial.) #mobilemoviemakingtips #mobilemoviemaking #audiorecording #recordingaudio #moviesound https://www.instagram.com/p/Bv-V5ivgCT1/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=18lt6ecdnrghz
