A Water-scarce World

Scientists have recently concluded that we are entering a new epoch : The Anthropocene. In the Anthropocene human beings are the major force of change. This means that we have attained a status equivalent to the great forces of nature, with the power to transform the globe dramatically. The speeding up of the hydrological cycle is only one example. There is also evidence that human beings are responsible for changes in the nitrogen and carbon cycles and for unprecedent rates of species extinction. Unlike the great geological forces, humankind's impact on the planet is rapid and cam change basic systems in a matter of years, rather than millennia. Anthropogenic impacts on these systems could threaten the integrity of life on Earth in ways that we may not fully understand or even be aware of it. Edith Brown Weiss
