What Crap Can My Character Go Through Realistically?
Yes, I realize that I am reposting from Pinterest again; I’m simply a strong believer in recycling. Also I’m American. I use Fahrenheit. You convert.

Food
Sometimes you just want to write out the characters having a nice meal. Or maybe you want them to be eating the poor man’s food and suffering. Whatever sprinkles your donut. Anywho, if you need a historically accurate meal then there’s this neat website called http://www.foodtimeline.org/ . It tells you the type of food they ate in the correct century or decade and yeeeeaaaah. Have a ball.
Maps
Building a world is always daunting, especially when you have to draw said world’s map. I personally hated this and I’m more than positive I’m not the only one. So here’s a link to help you with those pesky maps. Hopefully this helps.Â

(pssst also if you reeeeaaaallllllyyyyyy want to draw it. you can get a whole bunch of die or whatever the plural form of dice is and roll them. after they’ve been rolled trace the outline of all of them. it’ll look kind of like this.)
Cheers!
Character Personalities
There are a few different ways that I create a character’s personality. Some are more detail oriented than others, but all work well for me.
- The Myers–Briggs Type Indicator Test: This test was created as a type of questionnaire that’s sole purpose is to indicate the different perceptions people have on the world. I have found that it does work fairly well for creating complex characters.
- Zodiac Signs: Cliche? Maybe, but effective. I’m always pleased when I follow the rules of the signs. Of course I’m always a little biased towards Capricorn, but experimenting with different signs is always fun.
- Quotes: Okay this last one is a little meh, but hear me out. I love quotes. Like I literally carry around a little book with me to school to write down any quotes I read or hear from famous people in books or from my classmates or teachers. Occasionally a quote will really spark something with me. It will just take a shape in my mind and I can already see the type of dimples my half formed character has. So now and then I will go through my quote book and use those to make a character.
Out of these three ways I make characters, the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator Test is definitely my favorite. So choose your poison and/or comment what you use to create your characters.

Alarms
If you want to write about a rooster crowing in the distance in the mornings, then you are more than welcome to. But...what about those times when you just need a good old timer? It is not quite known when they were first used though according to Historyplex “The earliest known reference is found in a poem by the Chinese poet and thinker You Jiangu (520 CE).”
To use the clock candle, a candle was either marked directly or it’s case was marked at certain intervals to mark a certain amount of time.Â
A nail would then be driven into the candle at the desired mark; when the wax melted to the point the nail was driven to, the nail would fall and clang in the metal plate below the candle successfully alerting the user to the time that had passed.
So there you have it. A historically accurate alarm clock to write about.Â
