Fight at the Masquerade! The second of my #pinktober palettes, combining a couple of #TheArctober prompts as well! (No familiar though since Celeste doesn’t have one!) This took so much longer than I thought 😅 So I hope you like it!! 🤞
Red Beetle Pins
YALL I FIGURED IT OUT. The significance of the courtiers’ pins. Including Valerius’ ram pin. I knew they had something to do with the loyalty of each courtier, and it just clicked for me while I was thinking about Valerius’ possible past with Lucio.
The Red Beetle: the other courtiers are all obsessed with the plague. They’re not loyal to Lucio, they’re loyal to the disease that he happens to spread everywhere he goes. They would sell him to Satan for one corn chip if it would bring back the plague forever.
The Ram: Valerius is loyal only to Lucio. There’s definitely something that separates him from the others, visibly, personality-wise, and with the pins. I’ve thought for a while now that it’s because Valerius opted out of whatever deal the Devil offered the other four during the ritual, but now I understand why. He and Lucio have history together. They’re a lot closer personally than Lucio is with the others. My theory is that Valerius has some sort of strong feelings for Lucio, either platonically or romantically, and doesn’t support the plague because of what it’s done to him or other people Valerius cared about. He’s not in this for the power and glory of the plague, he’s in it because he doesn’t want to abandon someone he cares and is possibly worried about.
Overall, my conclusion is that there’ll be a turning point where Valerius will join MC’s side. Once it becomes clear that Lucio and the Plague aren’t one and the same and that Lucio is in danger, Valerius will want to stop him for Lucio’s own good. He’ll be counting on us to save his friend before it’s too late.
(Also thanks @starry-seafoam for letting me overwhelm your post. This came to me while I was writing a reply to you.)

Red Beetle Mystery
I have been thinking about red beetles and it’s possible connection to the red plague and I got an idea. This idea came when I was listening to some music from the movie Prince of Egypt.
Disclaimer that this is simply a thought and not a concrete theory or possible answer to the importance of red beetles, but perhaps it could be an answer who knows? I am not here to simply state that I am right so no discourse please <3
If we take a look at the Bible, specifically Book of Exodus with the story of Moses, Yahweh (God) unleashes horrible things to happen in Egypt; blood red water pestilence in a means to force the Pharoh to release the Israelites from slavery.
