Description

The cornflowers this young street vendor holds to her chest are for sale, and the paisley red shawl around her body is a type often made by child laborers, many of whom were Irish immigrants to Britain. Brown encountered this sitter while looking for subjects for Work, a larger painting about labor and class in Victorian England that he completed in 1865. Originally, The Irish Girl formed a pair with The English Boy, which depicts the artist’s five-year-old son wearing a hat and a smock and holding his toys. The two give contrasting views of childhood: his hair is brushed, hers is wild and unkempt; his gaze is innocent, hers is wily and self-possessed. His is a life of privilege, while she lives in poverty.

Elizabeth Alexeievna (Louise of Baden)

Empress Elizabeth Alexeyevna (née Louise Maria Augusta, Princess of Baden; 1779-1826) , daughter of Karl Ludwig, Margrave of Baden. She arrived in St. Petersburg in October, converted to Orthodoxy in September 1793, and married Grand Duke Alexander Pavlovich. From 1801, she became an empress. She was involved in charitable work.

Description

This appears at first glance to be a portrait of a lady in a landscape, against the sort of the rocky promontory which first appears in British art with the painting of Van Dyck, in which it features as an emblem of constancy as well as a convenient framing device. But in reality - though it may well also be a portrait of a now unknown sitter - the wealth of accoutrements reveal the painting to be an allegorical representation of one of the sciences, perhaps astronomy, which would agree with her sky-gazing attitude.
