#red shouldered bug

phone tumblr isnt letting me submit posts again so here’s some silly guys found in northern Florida for ID! (ik the pictures are kind of bad, unfortunately the bugs ran away fast so it was hard to get clear pics 🥲). The plant theyre on is nonnative to Florida, it’s actually an ornamental plum pine from south japan, so i was wondering what these bugs are and why they love it so much. thanks!

It's a red-shouldered bug, Jadera haematoloma. They feed primarily on seeds in the soapberry family, Sapindaceae, but will feed on other stuff when it's what's available.

So many red-shouldered bugs on campus today!! Found three adults and three sub-adults all within a 3ft square. What are they doing!

a funky lil friend decided to chill with me in the sun while i ate lunch. its a stink bug of some sort, right? im in california if that helps at all lol

I am always happy to post submissions anonymously. But I can remove location from submissions! Just not from asks. So for future reference you can always just ask me to remove the location from your submission instead of posting anonymously but of course it’s up to you.

Anyway this friend is a red-shouldered bug. That’s a type of true bug, like stink bugs, but it’s in a different family known as scentless plant bugs.

@leftoverys submitted: A red-shouldered bug (Jadera hematoloma) that rode the bus with me all the way to school :) I took them off the bus and put them in some bushes, hopefully they find some soapberry plants to grub from!

Adorable! What a nice bus companion to have. Glad they were released outside to live their best bug life :)

Yes, it is! Sometimes their wings don’t quite cover their abdomen even as full adults. What a fashionable outfit :)
