i'm thinking about bugs
freshly molted baby bugs often look like raw dough shaped into different ridiculous forms, but others are simply good at mimicking dry plants. this penultimate Stictopleurus nymph is the latter, and i dread to think how much paler it could be if it was also the former. go white boy go

Hi there! Can't seem to ID this bug; iNaturalist is sure it's a boxelder, but I'm not too certain that it is based on its underside (colored black) and its patterns not matching up with boxelders I've seen in the past. Lower Santa Clara county area, California. Pic taken today.
