Walk By Again

A deep-space long-term mission like the one they're embarking on means several things. A lot of preparation, triple-checking every duct and conduit and machine. Revisions, rebuilding, restocking... it also means restaffing. 80% of their crew is enlisted, and most of the men and women they had aboard previously have either just finished their term of enlistment or will see their term expire while the Enterprise is still in deep space. Some of them have already agreed to stay on for five years. Most of them haven't. That means that out of 488 crewman, over 300 of them are new.

He's going to have a hell of a time with names.

Jim's met Yeoman Rand already, thankfully. The moment he got her assignment as his personal assistant he contacted the woman and offered that he buy her lunch so that they could get to know each other a little in preparation for working together. It had gone along without any particular hitch. She was very pretty, aware and strong-willed with a straight back and a spark in her eye that made her very attractive, but she was his yeoman and that made her absolutely off-limits and he was just fine with that.

He'd met a few of the engineering folks on his last trip down to the warp core with Scotty, an antsy feeling locked in his chest. He'd met the mess crew- the officer mess crew, anyway, and some of the security enlists. All told by the time they left dock he'd only met two-dozen or so of his new crew. They were young, too, many of them. Barely 18,19, with only a few weeks of bootcamp under their belts.

Jim steps onto the bridge with a dazzling grin. (It's nice to be home again.) He greets the senior crew, mocks Bones, ensures that Carol feels at home, drops in his chair, sends them to warp, and-

It's pretty anticlimactic at that point. There's nothing to do until they get out of Federation space. Still, he feels it buzzing under his skin, eagerness and electric energy. Jim swivels his chair around as far as it can go, surveys the new faces sitting at consoles and moving about the bridge with a stupid, soppy smile on his face.

Pauses as a woman in red crosses to Spock, PADD in hand- for a heart-stopping second he thinks she's going to not notice the strange little step they have between the upper and lower deck and trip hard but nothing happens.

He blinks hard and doesn't catch himself staring.
