The Alternative University Project

I've started doing some work for Montreal's Alternative University Project - a group trying their best to figure out a better way to learn. A way that doesn't rely on government funding or private institutions. 

I've had my own share of university education. I've managed to score a Masters and a Bachelor's degree at one of the top universities in the UK for free - a fantastic loophole in the Scottish de-evolution mindset I am sure not many English, Welsh, or Northern Irish students are too pleased with.

Uni forced me to start coding. I am never going to say that I wasted four years of my life learning these things - but I might say I'm not sure it was worth the $16,000 a year some of my international friends were throwing up.

The professors were there for research purposes - classes were as much of a chore for them as they were for their pupils - so I hardly went to lectures. I opted to spend that time in the computer labs finishing homework for each course or working on projects outside of my curriculum. I used the Internet, my classmates, and my friends as teachers. 

Of course, there are some things you can't learn on the Internet - I just happened to have picked a direction that lives on the the Internet, behind a computer screen. Sometimes it's easier if you throw yourself into making, and occasionally you need that nudge from the people around you.

And I think that's what the Alternative University Project is trying to achieve. Currently their courses and the organization of the group itself is being run through Facebook. But understandably they want to be moving away from big corporates.
