More Whiterose Perfection...
I don't know how much more obvious the symbolism and parallels between them can be really.
RWBY's Trailers were... a problem in the making.
The way I see it, as somebody who didn’t even see them until after finishing Volume 1, the Trailers were something of a double edged sword.
On the one hand, they went beyond just giving us clips of an upcoming project edited together into a trailer. They were more akin to pilots for networks at a shorter runtime each where we got a taste for the show’s style or at least part of what they hoped to convey.
The Red Trailer was of a young girl alone in the snowy wild facing black beasts and having an epic battle. There was no dialogue, no voice actress at the time, but the kind of action expected of Monty Oum.
The White Trailer was of another young girl singing a beautiful song about what was likely her inner most conflict while we, presumedly, saw a flashback of her and a giant knight having an epic battle with powers that hinted at a magic system of sorts.
The Black Trailer showed a pair who were clearly renegades fighting “the man” for whatever reason only for the male partner to seemingly go a step too far. Tall, black and broody girl cutting the coupling speaks volumes, indicating that this is a falling out for her. What’s the reason? What were they fighting for? What’s she running from?
The Yellow Trailer showed a blonde bombshell straight out of any year’s top rated seasonal Anime and with the rack to boot. She looks good but busts the club manager’s boss before going Super Saiyan on the mooks and two twin girls. We also meet Red again who is her sister and sounds nothing like the moody goth we thought her to be.
Obviously, there was more going on beneath the surface since it only showed and told so much. It was meant to tease what was likely to come and more. Rooster Teeth and Monty Oum together had plenty of hype combined but it being on Crunchyroll to boot gained it more eyes than it… likely should’ve.
Because it was paired with the Seasonal Anime of its debut year, AniTube and AniTwitter did what it did best: make it their whipping boy just shy of SAO. There was no acknowledgement that this was a low budget, high concept web based animation from those that brought them Red vs. Blue. Outside of it being “sh*t.”
I won’t get into the weeds with them but they certainly set the tone to come. Shifting to the fans that the Trailers actually hooked in, Volume 1 would certainly throw many for a loop with a lot of things.
A Magic School premise.
Weiss being a mean girl.
The very cringe comedy (that has its web series charm, mind you).
And last but certainly not least, Jaune Arc.
Now I mentioned that I never seen the Trailer until after Volume 1. And… I feel like that’s why I felt such a disconnect with the common complaints at the time. Even so, when it was just the Trailers, many would-be fans found it to be a vertiable sandbox for pet ideas based on what little they could find.
Like, say, that masked edgy sword boy in the Black Trailer looked really important and perhaps was a “complex villain” in the making.
They invest so much of that to the point that when the actual thing comes out, disappointment on some level was inevitable. Whatever they envisioned was not going to be that, even if they came close, because, well, no one on the CRWBY was obligated to. This was their show, their story.
They didn’t set any of those tangential expectations. The burgeoning fandom just got too attached to what they’d made.
Sometime I watch the Red trailer just to feel something and everyone I feel the same euphoria at the scythe spinning and the gunshots. It’s so peak. The world is bright and so cool.
The original color trailers might honest to god be some of the best action scenes ever created. Monty was a real once in a generation talent.
RWBY "Red" Trailer: A Review
I wanted to do an in-depth analysis on the video that first got the RWBY ball rolling. I am referring, of course, to the "Red" trailer, that first premiered at the end of the Red vs Blue Season 10 credits.
I say I 'wanted' to do an in-depth analysis, but considering the video content, that's hard to do. There is virtually nothing to really derive from this display. It's pure aesthetics, no plot or characterization. I've read that according to Monty Oum, it's not so much a look at Ruby Rose (Who isn't even named here) as it is a demonstration of her weapon, Crescent Rose. Everything else about RWBY, Remnant, or the story that will be told, is naught but a distant gleam in one animator and his friends' eyes.
We start out at night, amidst a full moon, as a little red hooded girl stands before a grave at the edge of a cliff. the skies are clear, but there is a light snow falling. I must once again state that the World of Remnant as we'll come to know does not exist at this point. We get more about what to expect from the song that plays in the background than anything shown in the trailer. And what's more, in hindsight, the song isn't so much about the Red character as much it's about the other girls, White, Black, Yellow (Later named Weiss, Blake, Yang).
"Red like roses fills my dreams and brings me to the place you rest"
Fitting words for a scene set at a gravestone. Could these lyrics refer to 'Red' being a dreamer? Or does she only exist in someone's dreams? Were she in the last thoughts of whomever the grave is for? It should be noted that when Monty Oum created the video, he gave no thought to what the grave was about, apparently putting it for the look of things.
(Taken from RTX 2016 Panel)
MONTY: (About who the grave is for) I don't know. We just thought it would be cool.
JEFF WILLIAMS: What if it is her mother?
"White is cold and always yearning, burdened by a royal test"
Red now walks through the woods, and the camera works puts emphasis on the snowy weather. "White is cold". Is this referring to White's physical state? Is she in need of warmth? Or perhaps it means her disposition. Or perhaps it means she has ice/cold related powers. As the White trailer show, all may be the truth.
"Black the beast descends from shadows"
Unsurprisingly, these ominous lyrics herald monsters that surround our little Red. (See what I did there). At a first glance, you would think that the character Black has some connection to the monsters. But this is misleading. Black in fact refers to Blake's initial dour and withdrawn personality, and her eventually developing expression. But 'Descends'...has Black been uplifted, or placed on a pedestal?
"Yellow beauty burns gold"
Here, as the monsters strike and Red vanishes, we see her true, uncloaked self, with the moon acting as a natural spotlight. The moonlight provides the 'yellow' and we see Red's cute face thus showing her 'beauty.' That Red is first shown during the 'Yellow' lyric may be a hint towards that she and the future character Yellow. The lyrics effectively spell out Yellow's outer character.
Then, we get to the action. Red first uses the gun portion of her weapon, shooting each monster with ease. Then, she unveils her scythe, showing that she can go for close-combat as well. There's not much to say after that, but I should bring up the faint smile Red makes before lopping on monster's head off. This tells us one thing;
This is a girl who does not shy away from battle.
RWBY is pretty cool when you don't have fans being inappropriate about the creators' death in your ear
I just found this fan animation and it's soooooo good. This is canon Red extended trailer as far as I'm concerned. Top comment on it is that this channels such raw Monty fight choreography and it's completely true. RT needs to hire this person for future seasons.
