I did a thing and Miles was beyond kind about it. I was expecting maybe a 'yeah thanks for the money and they're cute' but I got a whole ass 6 minutes on my ot3 with a cute scenario that I had to write into a story. Thank you for humoring me and being so kind about the cameo!

I don't undertail the Ruby x Young!Maria ship and I'm tired of pretending that I do. Someone please explain this to me like I'm five.
Whiterose pulled me into Rwby. I've often had thoughts of writing fic, but never managed it, but somehow the idiots grabbed hold, and didn't let go.
So for a long while I was team WR ride, or die. Eventually as I ran out of stories to read I started imagining more, and met a super cool artist named @it-me-butts who did very cute FrosenSteel art (Ruby/Weiss/Penny), and it got me open to thinking more about ot3's.
In most other fiction I'd read it was less ot3's and more a harem with someone at the center, and I remember being annoyed because I'd be interested in one, or two of the other characters, but harem fics work on the numbers game, and your character gets their 15 minutes of fame when they join and a line every other chapter so you can remember they exist, and that's about it.
So I didn't want that pitfall, but a polycule of a small group that cared and respected each other? That I liked.
I experimented with WR+1 and really liked it because it let me keep the same WR base and season it with another flavor.
Some of those fics I like, and still think are good, like Dance like No one is Watching, Shot to the Heart, or Coco's Journal, but while they all worked with a certain au, or idea they weren't as ubiquitous as Whiterose were.
I would struggle to think of an ot3 in various media I'd engage with the way I could just seemlessly shove in WR and have it work. (Pizza au was made with the idea that WR really were that versatile and any setting had them work out). As much as I like Carmine not even she reaches that mark, although the fact that she's an actual villain does open her up to more situations to write her in, which is fun.
Maria was a very late edition to the show. Like most people my first thought was just 'oh the yoda grandma' same as most.
During Radio Grimm I had the idea of trying it out because of the very unique situation present. It was my first time really trying to write her younger, and it shows. Some of her ticks, or traits are gone, or amplied, but the core of it is kind of there, and it fascinated me.
So I looked back at her one young scene in the show. (As an example for shot to the heart I replayed May's 1 fight against JNPR about 50 times listening to how she sounded, her little smirks, and confident sounds, how she moved etc to form a potential base personality).
At any rate, the more I watched the fight, the more I dug into how she reacted (posing on a nevermore in the middle of nowhere etc) I began to see more and more cool ideas, and drew out parallels between them.
A few quick ones is that they're all rather lonely young women, with a missing parent, who have huge expectations placed on them. Ruby her eyes, leadership, etc. Weiss and her being the SDC Heir, and people who want to use her for that, and Maria her silver eyes, and family title that makes her push herself to be the best and not show weakness.
So they have a nice little group where they each know the others can be trusted and that they aren't using them, Ruby gets a SE mentor, Weiss gets people who don't care about her name, or money (I think we can all agree Maria really doesn't give a shit young or old), Maria gets people she can trust at her back so she doesn't have to be alone, and partners.
So I wanted them to get together, but ofc in canon they're separated by a half centuryish. Tough to do right? Meh. It's fanfiction. The whole joy of fanfiction is to take and shape reality.
As Charles Barkley of Shut up and Jam Gaiden once said 'I believe ghosts are like dogs, and Fanfiction writers. They just sort of do things arbitrarily."
At any rate, just saying Maria was born later seemed like the easiest way to handle it. Sure you can do a fic or two of them being thrown in the past, or Maria forward in time (Dak did a great concept of that with 2 maria's one old, and one young), but overall her dad had her in his 60's instead of at 18 is an easy fix, and correlates to John Tyler the tenth president born in 1790. Until a few years ago he had 2 living grandchildren because of his families habit of having children in their late 60's-70's.
I saw a side character I really liked who basically had no screentime, and an essentially wasted life and I wanted more for her. I had a pair of idiots I loved, and I threw them in a box together.
To my delight, and no one else's, I found them to be very fun, and they have a lot of chemistry imo.
Weiss has a weakness for silver eyed dunces, and Silver eyed dunces for Schnee woman, or basically short ones like Weiss.
The two of them together help remind Weiss that there's more to life than work and keep her having fun and not working herself to death to right her father's wrongs.
Ruby has 2 people who truly believe in her and keep her on the path to being the huntress and leader they know she can be and can handle her when she gets morose
Maria has a set of people who care about her, and keep her ego in check that keep her from wandering away on adventure she might not come back from, and engaged in the here and now
Ruby and Maria are similar enough that they work together very well, but are different enough that they cause plenty of problems to keep things from becoming stale. (Winter beefs with Maria because Maria shows deference to just about no one, and Winter hates lack of respect as an example)
In a world about gods with a shattered moon, or in the world of fanfic where people will write about Optimus opening a coffee shop with Megatron, or a world of warcraft fanfic where they land in the world of steven universe, well what's changing one persons date of birth? As long as you remember the effect that has (Qrow and Ruby's weapons being different most liklely) then why not have fun right?
If we wanted canon then canon is there to rewatch or read so why not fill in the space with something fun? I have fun, and hope others do too.
As far as just Ruby x Young Maria it's mostly the same just without Weiss there. People that know they can trust each other. As far as I know the ship with just Ruby and Maria is Silver Eyed Reapers. If I didn't explain any of that well just lemme know. Or if you had specifics rather.

I know that the popular opinion is that no one likes a Mary Sue, you know a character that everyone in the story loves, or finds super attractive, or interesting, or someone that never actually loses a fight, and only the villain hates. But does anyone enjoy thoes characters? Or has a Mary Sue even been done right?
It might depend on your definition of done right. Sometimes it is fun to watch a hero in a fanfic who just solves the problems easily, sometimes a power fantasy can be fun in certain doses.
In crack fics for example the Ruby polycute always amuses me.
If you mean in published media you could argue the webcomic One Punch Man does. The joke is that no matter what he's always going to win in one punch. He hates this, and it keeps happening. If a monster attacks he's more worried about getting correct change, his backstory is a joke about basic strength training. He's drawn very lazily without a complicated design as he dreams about one day finding an enemy to fight and make him bleed.
Ofc people do dislike him because they think he's a cheater etc but generally he doesn't care, and anyone who actually gets to know him is astonished at his power. He's like bald, and bad at video games and directions. I think it can be done right, but it requires not taking it overly seriously, just wanting a fun break from normal, or someone who is well aware of exactly what's going on, and works hard to keep it done right.
That's just my 2l though
Yeah I get that. I think that when everyone kinda falls for the main character it has to be done for whimsy and it shouldn't be to serious, like Ouran Highschool Host Club where basically everyone of importance is into Haruhi but its made to be funny. But if everyone is seriously in love if the MC in a super serious way than it's kinda boring like Sword art online that every girl is in love with Kirito, it just gets annoying.
SOA is weird. Like they basically got the two main people together but keep letting girls fall for him, and I hate it. It's a shame I really liked the first half of S1 in the death game, and Argo was my favorite, but...oh well. Kinda reminds me of the Jaune harem fics people like to write sometimes lol.

I get why most Osley/Frostpine/Rich Farmer/whatever-you-call-them fics take place either after Ozpin's out of Oscar's head or in an AU where that's not a thing at all
But that said I do kind of like the idea of pre-relationship Frostpine while Oscar still has the Damocles Sword that is the impending Merger hanging over his head
So Oscar's reluctant to do act on these new feelings because 1. he doesn't even know how much time he has left before the Merger fully assimilates him into Oz, and 2. even if that wasn't an issue, he's not going to date someone while there's an immortal wizard in his head because No
Meanwhile Oz has multiple lifetimes of relationships going bad - on at least one occasion, catastrophically bad - and is basically telling Oscar "NO. NOPE. BAD IDEA. NO"
And all of that is making Oscar repress and deny having any feelings for Whitley, and you'd think Whitley would be handling this better what with not having an immortal wizard in his head, but nope the Schneeblings are all Bad At Feelings
(This started as a comment, but grew bgi enough to warrant being the reblog.) There is quite a bit of potential for comedy(or even more horror, which is more in line with the rest of the Oscar/Oz merger storyline) in having Oscar getting a romance plotline, as Ozpin might very well have advice to give (and probably has had to deal with similar scenarios during earlier lives, especially when Oscar seems to be unusually young for Oz' reincarnations. High chance he dropped in when at least one incarnation was already deeply involved in a relationship.)
(And now I'm curious how alike each incarnation was pre-merger. Since there are some traits that are consistent across incarnations, "Like-minded soul" and all that, I wonder if sexuality is among the traits that all incarnations share or if it is a variable. If the latter there's a good chance that Oz by this point has a sexuality of 'yes', though with so much trauma that he may as well be aroace for as much as it factors into his actions post-mergers.)
The comedy take would be Ozpin chiming in with advice on how to approach romance rooted in centuries of experience (advice which might be really solid or be easily the single worst suggestion possible) or reminicing about memories of similar incidents in his past (with my sense of humour wanting to suggest that the memories are of variations that are somehow always even more absurd than whatever indignity Oscar had to deal with.)
Nobody ever seems to want to bring up his very first reincarnation when he comes back to meet Salem. Like dude imagine how wife/kids/family must have felt.
So if RWBY was public domain...what would you do with it? Because I remember that was going around.

add more time at beacon, Pyrrha dying was a loss but other than that it's hard to point to something tangible we lost. Giving them more time at beacon with other characters can help with that
More bonding between teammates and other students. Ren and Blake making tra Yang and Nora weight lifting Ruby and Blake and velvet book club etc.
The team evil plan basically goes off without a hitch add a few snags in the way to help explain why we're at school longer and push vytal back a little or make it happen 2nd year.
If you don't then it makes team good guy look incompetent and wonder why Salem hasn't just already won by now. Maybe there was a godzilla marathon on
I've never been a fan of team evil who has tens of thousands of years always picks the exact year our protags just start to make trouble. That could just be me though. If I knew specifically why Salem was picking now I might change this.
minor change but have someone come get Weiss other than her dad. Seeing how easily he folds I don't buy he'd go into danger even to get Weiss have him send a merc since we know carmine exists this is a great time to introduce her in a theoretical retelling.
Maria is young and ready to hold hands. Ruby gets a tutor her age and maria can still be on the train to get some replacement eyes.

try to work ilia in a little earlier into the story and by that same note now that we know Blake's past add more hints to it or have her make more changes to her outfit than a bow.
in the vein if Jacques he needs to be smart. This man fooled everyone for a decade and people are terrified of him...somehow. make him weak physically but his business acumen really is insane. He has contingency after contingency in place for if he's killed death squads mercs and so many middle men and companies that he's basically untouchable. Winter only got away because she's serving as the number two to the general of the largest army on Rem. Play up his strengths so his eventual downfall is more satisfying.
more (d)wr moments in every volume. This can only help.
When Pyrrha dies more than Jaune takes her stuff. I want Nora to add her shield to outfit Ren to slap on her bracelets because she's all of their friend. Sure she was jaunes love interest etc but she mattered to all of them and I want them all to show it in a way to unite them.
