22/06/2021-Post 3 of 3: Aber Falls
Following on from my previous post, as planned this afternoon we came out of Anglesey for a bit and visited Aber Falls which you could see from the boat trip around Puffin Island funnily enough. On every holiday we go on over the last half decade or so we always have to do one trip at least in the area where we look for Dippers. And this then automatically means when we do we go to a stunningly beautiful area where they inhabit with gushing water over rocky river courses often through valleys and very often wooded. Wales is perfect for this of course and at Aber Falls we found a typically Welsh landscape with the sheep and everything sensational spot one of the best beauty spots we have seen this week for sure. We advanced in fairly scorching conditions on what was a truly lovely day weather wise through a strong mountainous landscape with lots of high woodland cover too and lots of different aspects of the stunning landscape such as nice open areas. I took the first, third, fourth and tenth pictures in this photoset on the stunning walk to the falls and back, second of beautiful water, and fifth picture in this photoset of a tree against the bright blue sky.
We made it to the majestic falls which I took the sixth and seventh pictures in this photoset of with a couple of waterfalls where water trickled off of sheer edges and looked absolutely gorgeous. They are one of the highest falls I’ve ever seen and it was just smashing and breathtaking to be here especially at the main falls where it was exhilarating to hear and see the water rushing down I took a video of this scene on my phone as I posted a link from my Instagram of in the sun and areas of shade of the waterfall and the general landscape as evening came which helped me take photos for a light and shade theme in the photography group we are in that has themes and this is the current theme I really loved being here it was such a wow moment.
It was interesting to see a characteristic of the habitat Grey Wagtail around in the river near the waterfall and also in the falls itself higher up than I had seen one before I think. I got the eighth picture in this photoset of this.
Then in a glorious moment as it always seems to be just when we were wondering if we might see one today a Dipper darted by us a sweet grey juvenile in this lovely patch of river just below the impressive waterfall. It settled on the rocks and we watched it for a little bit. It was then truly breathtaking to see it with extreme clarity in an exciting moment as it flew again going the other way. It was yet another year tick for this holiday and yet another of our targets seen we really have seen most of them already now and this one is always a relief to see when we can a fifth year running we have seen them I remember upon the right postponement of this holiday this week last year I thought my chance was gone for Dipper not a bird around locally for us but we snuck one in at Fingle Bridge on the weekend away in Devon instead of the Bird Fair last August. Yet another favourite bird to see this took my bird year list to 168 meaning it’s level with the amount of birds I saw in total during both 2013 and 2015 making it my joint seventh highest ever year list now. I would be forgiven for thinking it would be hard to get here this year after that locked down start to the year before the great resurgence of my year list so it felt amazing to get here.
Walking back we found a great dry open patch for birds seeing lovely young Redstart and some Wheatears which was great to see and no surprise for this area really. We saw a dragonfly too I couldn’t quite tell which but possibly a Southern Hawker.
Then in this ideal weather we had a strong walk for butterflies too as with more views of them stopped and two photos I took compared to other days where we have certainly seen them they arrived in the holiday in a true sense. We saw a warm Peacock on the way to the falls and back and also got amazing views in the special sunshine of one of the butterflies of the moment as we go into summer Large Skipper and a smashing, rich and brightly coloured Red Admiral which I was very pleased to get the ninth picture in this photoset of.
It was a great walk for flowers as well with foxgloves seen strongly they are taking over the landscape and transforming it pink I do just love them so much this is amazing and has been a key part of the holiday. It was also lovely to see lots of tormentil, herb-Robert and of course red campion such key flowers this holiday giving a strong showing everywhere. Today was another fantastic day out generally and this visit was amazing its such a special place it was great to get to see a good bit of wider North Wales with breathtaking scenes and smashing wildlife yet again. At a place like this you get to see so many varied people all enjoying this amazing sight too and once again we spoke to some brilliant people and had some great conversations today.
Wildlife Sightings Summary: My first of one of my favourite birds the Dipper this year, another of my favourite birds the Buzzard, two of my favourite butterflies the Large Skipper and Red Admiral, Grey Wagtail, Redstart, Robin, Chaffinch, Wheatear, Peacock, Small White, dragonfly I couldn’t quite see which possibly Southern Hawker and bee likely red-tailed bumblebee.
