Fun—is it frivolity or necessity?

Toshiko Horiuchi MacAdam was exhibiting one of her textile sculptures—a three-dimensional, open work the contemporary artist had created in collaboration with a friend—when, suddenly, some children in the gallery climbed on it.

Where adults saw a work of art to be observed, children had seen an opportunity to play. The moment sparked a new chapter in Ms. Horiuchi MacAdam’s career; she began installing hand-made, rainbow-colored crochet playgrounds around the world, from Spain to Seoul.

Ms. Horiuchi MacAdam’s work is one of several featured in the Toledo Museum of Art’s summer exhibition, Play Time, which stretches from inside the building across the campus and into unexpected territory across downtown Toledo. Visitors will have the opportunity to jump, swing, and climb on works of art throughout the summer, between Memorial Day and Labor Day weekend.

The contemporary art show poses a serious question about a seemingly unserious topic: Is play—the spontaneous, unstructured time found to foster creativity and problem-solving skills—strictly for kids?

“As we grow up we tend to trivialize play and relegate it to childhood, but it’s an important element of life that we wanted to explore in an exhibition,” said Halona Norton-Westbrook, the Museum’s Mellon Fellow and associate curator of contemporary art. “This show is not only about play in the traditional sense, but also the idea of being in the moment, of inspiring wonder, of invoking your natural curiosity.”

Co-curated by Dr. Norton-Westbrook and Associate Director Amy Gilman, Play Time is a more experimental exhibition format for the Museum that aims to defy traditional ideas of art viewing with “pop-ups that aren't confined to one space or one time or one medium,” according to Dr. Norton-Westbrook. “We wanted to challenge ourselves to find ways to extend the experience into the community.”

Works on view and experiences will change throughout June, July, and August. Some will even move locations, like artist Kurt Perschke’s Redball Project. The name is literal: Mr. Perschke has placed the massive, inflated ball that is the public work’s namesake and squeezed it into unexpected city spaces in Abu Dhabi, Taipei, Toronto, Sydney, Montreal—the list is extensive. Spectators seem drawn to bouncing up against it, photographing themselves near it, and generally staring at it in curious wonder. Mr. Perschke will choose several locations around Toledo to place the Redball Project during its ten-day display in August.

Redmoon, a Chicago-based theatrical troop known for using larger-than-life contraptions and puppets to create performances bright with spectacle, will offer the most ephemeral of Play Time experiences when they perform. Other artworks include Jillian Mayer’s Swing Space, a literal title for a dreamy work of art that involves swinging into a projection of a cloudy sky; Kim Harty’s Glass Mountain, which the glassblower creates using molten glass in front of a live audience; Stina Köhnke’s Animation, a trippy stuffed animal installation; and Edith Dekyndt’s Ground Control, a black ball filled with helium that moves in reaction to the number of people in the gallery.

“Being ‘in the moment’ can be a challenge in adulthood, and these works really demand that of their viewers,” said Dr. Gilman. “They physically and mentally engage you in a way that’s very lighthearted, and that’s the aim, to show that art doesn't have to be serious. It can have serious intent without feeling pedantic.”

我們所習慣的世界。

經歷過世界各大城市，目前已完成19個城市巡迴的「Redball project」。藝術家使用一顆紅色巨體，來探索人們與城市下的互動，發掘更多面貌的可能性。原本你可能不曾注意或經常忽視、與過於習慣的場所，終被外來物體打破了場所平衡，帶來更多注視與新奇感。

這位紐約藝術家Kurt Perschke，持續著看似單調又充滿趣味性的行動藝術：一顆紅球與它的計畫，不斷地萌芽。

在法國展出時，是種奇幻，經過Luxembourg Gardens、Canal Saint-Martin以及The Seine。

The Red Ball Project

"Through the RedBall Project I utilize my opportunity as an artist to be a catalyst for new encounters within the everyday," [artist Kurt] Perschke writes on the RedBall Project website. "On the surface, the experience seems to be about the ball itself as an object, but the true power of the project is what it can create for those who experience it... The larger arc of the project is how each city responds to that invitation and, over time, what the developing story reveals about our individual and cultural imagination."

The ball was last seen in Rennes, France as part of the Les Tombées de la Nuit arts festival, where it sat between two pillars, its chubby excess lurching out from behind the architecture. Next up, the sphere is heading to Galway, Ireland on July 17 until the 23, in conjunction with the Galway International Arts Festival.
