To answer your question, Toby and Ej don't know each other in canon because EJ doesn't even have a canonical story, as all his stories are just based off of his picture and they're fanon! ^^ Toby's creator has never mentioned anything about ej and Toby's friendship or them knowing each other (as far as I know 🙏🏼🙏🏼)

Also don't worry about going into the fandom blind because it doesn't have any sort of lore that you need to force yourself to learn LOL XD reading or watching the Creepypasta stories is probably the only thing you need to do if you have a favourite character, or if you want to write fanfics etc etc!! :3
