Indians Welcome, Alcatraz. The red paint is a reminder of the Red Power Movement when Alcatraz was occupied by 89 American Indians. (November 20, 1969 – June 11, 1971). The protest was led by Richard Oakes, LaNada Means, and others; John Trudell was the spokesman. This group lived on the island together until the protest was forcibly ended by the U.S. government. The group claimed the island by provisions of the Treaty of Fort Laramie (1868), which states that abandoned federal lands were to be returned back to the native peoples. Protesters demanded that Indian education, ecology and cultural centres were to be built on the island. #alcatraz #alcatrazisland #prison #sanfrancisco #sanfranciscolove #indianswelcome #redpower #counterculture #1960s #americanculture #sign #signs #signage #tourism #sanfranciscotravel #california #californiahistory #bloggersofinstagram #travelblogger #historyblog #outandaboutwithliz #usa https://www.instagram.com/p/CF_lZGBMCsk/?igshid=19ktn3j3odf8b
