Did you ever watch the Red Skelton Show? It was on the air for 20 years, 1951-1971, essentially my whole life through high school. I asked my wife last night if she ever heard of Freddy the Freeloader, and she said she hadn't, but she knew of the Red Skelton Show. Hmmm … I don't know why I thought of Freddy the Freeloader, perhaps I was thinking of Ben and Charlie, they are free loaders after all. 😂 I lived with my grandparents at times while growing up, so the show was a staple along with The Lawrence Welk Show. It was a variety show, and Skelton was funny in clownish way. I recall he humbly ended each show my saying: "Good night and may God bless."

Rankin Bass Draw 20 (Day 18) - Father Time

Time marches on for us all.

Admittedly I'm starting to get worn down by this challenge to draw 20 characters. I'm not sure I'm giving my 100% to the last few. That's why I stopped at 20 instead of going all the way to Christmas or the end of the month. Still got two more to go and I'm really excited about these last two (though one of them's a cheat bit of a cheat to this challenge).

Happy Birthday Red Skelton! As rubber-faced as Jim Carey with the high energy of Robin Williams, Red was the premier comedian of his day. Because he was always clowning around, I get the sense that he may have been joking here in this interview: ’Red Skelton has copyrighted every joke he has written since he was 10 (“or maybe not until I was 12”), when he wrote down a joke and sent it to himself by registered mail to have proof of where and when he wrote it. He once was going to sue Lucille Ball (“a dear friend”) for stealing a skit, the one in which she drinks some tonic and gets drunk. Red Skelton mural, Vincennes, IN - Had to snap a pic because almost exactly 15 years ago, I stayed at the Amargosa Opera House hotel in Death Valley and booked the room named in honor of Red Skelton, since he stayed there many times over the years, and it seemed appropriate to pay homage to fellow Hoosier. Completely underestimated how unsettling it'd be to have circus performers and acrobats painted on the floors and ceilings as I tried to sleep. The Red Skelton museum here was closed and undergoing some renovation work.
