SWM Vission: The West Midlands is leading in contributing to the national target of net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 whilst addressing health inequality and driving inclusive growth. The West Midlands’ Sustainability Roadmap to 2030 focuses on improving social, economic and environmental indicators across the West Midlands for a more sustainable, fairer and greener region for all.  Building on the previous Roadmap for 2010 – 2020, SWM has consulted with experts, with our members and with hundreds of other stakeholders to ensure that our Roadmap is evidence based and uses the best available data. The eight focus areas cover priority challenges facing the West Midlands and each includes a vision statement and, where possible, a target for 2030. Through cross-sector working across local authority boundaries, we look to create a region with more low carbon jobs, reduced levels of carbon and improved life expectancy. Originally, our baseline year for commencement of monitoring the data associated with each of the below priorities was 2020. This has now been moved as many of the data will have been significantly skewed as a result of the Coronavirus outbreak, especially around metrics such as carbon emissions, sustainable growth and air quality. Therefore, we have made the decision to use a 2019 baseline to reflect a more ‘normal’ year, with the final year still set at 2030. How can the improved road Infrastructure can reduce carbon emissions

The transport sector accounts for a major proportion of all greenhouse gases. In order to reduce emissions, it is important to take into account all factors affecting the fuel consumption of vehicles. In addition to more effective vehicles, improvements to the infrastructure can contribute to a reduction in fuel consumption.

As the name suggests, #lowcarboninfrastructure generates fewer carbon emissions than traditional infrastructure and helps build resilience in vulnerable countries while protecting against exposure to extreme climate change events.

•Railway infrastructure, which can reduce the number of carbon-emitting trucks. •Urban transport projects, such as Metros and Light Rail projects which reduce car usage- one of the more notable sources of carbon emissions. •#renewableenergy projects (solar, wind, and hydropower), which have much lower carbon emissions compared to fossil fuels.
