as someone who worked fast food 10 years ago and is doordashing a lot now its actually sooo despicable how much worse an industry that was already so wretched has gotten for the workers. when i worked at mcdonalds in 2016 there would always be at LEAST one person on shift assigned to JUST stay at the front counter/register, but it seems with all the alternate ordering options that have been added/expanded in those 10 years-- kiosks mobile app drive thru curbside all the different delivery apps-- MOST fast food chains have decided to just totally nix having a front counter dedicated person. so anyone who can answer questions about the 949768 different non-counter orders OR take orders at the counter is also trying to take out curbside orders, bag + put out drive thru orders, bag + put out in-store orders, bag + put out delivery orders, etc etc. And the customers are meaner and more impatient than 10 years ago bc they will walk into a store that looks empty with no one in the drive thru and still wait 10 minutes to even make their order bc the staff are occupied with 10 doordash and mobile app orders that are invisible to the people waiting in line at the store. like such a higher volume of orders and noticeably LESS staff dedicated to specific tasks, more of everyone getting very little done while trying to juggle 100 things. this is the case in every industry not just fast food and is the end stage for every product and service under capitalism its just SO directly observable at fast food places to me rn
