“When I was lying there in the VA hospital, I started having these dreams of flying. I was free.”
“Sooner or later though, you always have to wake up.”
You used to love taking long walks. Even though Earth is destroyed and dead, you loved walking everywhere. You would walk to the market, the bar, a Friends house. You don’t have any friends anymore.
Then, the accident happened. You were a marine, molded by loud yells and exercises. You suffered a spinal injury in battle and was forced to retire from the lack of leg use.
You became a shell of yourself. You used your legs to get everywhere and now you’re forced to roll everywhere. You can’t stand. You can’t adjust your position in bed when you’re uncomfortable unless you want to go through a whole arm workout. You don’t really have any muscle anymore, so it’s hard. It’s hard and it’s depressing. So, you drink.
You drink and you fight and you drink and you fight. You’re running out of money. You didn’t have much to begin with, hence the no spinal surgery, but now you are really low. Almost in debt. And you don’t care. You’re a fucking loser who beats people for fun. To be fair, those people are assholes but still.
Right now, you spot a man towering over a woman. She looks frightened. Terrified even. You start to make your way over, through the crowd. You see him raise his arm to hit her but you make it there in time. You throw the punch before he can see it and he gets knocked out. You launch yourself out of your chair using your arms and jump onto him.
“You wanna beat on women, bitch?!” You yell in his face, punching it repeatedly. It’s all a blur. That’s how the fights usually are. A blur. You’re pretty sure the woman is trying to pull you off. Or going to get somebody, but you don’t care. Then, you get pulled off of him, being held up by your armpits as you’re dragged out of the bar. “Fuck you, punk! Fuck you!”
You try to wiggle out of their grasp but the people don’t budge. You’re thrown onto the sidewalk, your wheel chair following after you. It’s raining. It’s normally raining on Earth. Earth hasn’t had a good day in a long time. Before you were here, before your grandparents were here. Earth sucks.
Your hair is wet from the puddle you landed in. You bark out a laugh, the adrenaline from the fight still coursing through you as you heave breathes. Your chest moves up and down quickly. Steps are heard approaching you.
“Y/N L/N?” A deep voice asks. You look over and see two men in black suits, very clean-cut and professional.
“Yeah?” You question. Why are they here? What do they want?
“Your sister.” The other man states. “We would like to talk to you about taking over her contract.”
“Waking up in cryo, 6 years later, didn’t feel like 6 years. It just felt like waking up after go hard on drinking and a good ass whooping the night before.”
You open your eyes slowly, a small headache in the back of your mind. Two droplets of water form in front of you. You slowly slide out of your pod.
Your twin sister, Sarah, is dead. She was killed a week before she was supposed to travel to Pandora. The Avatar she was gonna take over cost millions and millions of dollars and it couldn’t be wasted. So, they came for you. The two of you share the same DNA, so now you are here to do her job.
A man floats in front of you, he’s wearing white scrubs. He reaches out to the restraints on your body.
“Are we there yet?” You ask in a hoarse voice from the disuse of many years.
“Yeah, we’re there, sunshine.” He pats your shoulder with a smile. “We’re there.”
Another man in white scrubs yells out, “You’ve been in cryo for five years, nine months and 22 days!” You float towards the compartment that holes your stuff. It’s labeled ‘L/N, S’ for Sarah, not you. “You will be hungry, you will be weak. If you feel nausea please use the sacks…”
“Sarah was the scientist. Me, I’m just another idiot going someplace she’s going to regret.”
Up ahead, was Pandora. Everyone grew up hearing about it, but you never figured you’d be going there. The voice still echoes in your mind.
‘The pay is good. Very good.’
It’s exactly what you need. Money.
“Exo-packs on! Let’s go! Exo-packs on!”
His assistant repeats, “Exo-packs on! Let’s go!”
The guy walks in front of the recruits. He’s wearing grey scrubs, he must be a higher up. Especially since he’s bossing you around. You grab your Exo-packs and slip the strap over your head, pressing the button to secure it to your face.
“Remember, people, you lose that mask you’re unconscious is 20 seconds. Dead in 4 minutes.” He raises his voice. “Let’s nobody be dead today! Looks very bad on my report.” You chuckle a little at his joke as the plane approaches Hell’s Gate.
“One life ends, another begins.”
“Harnesses off! Get your packs!” The man yells out.
You unclip the many seatbelts over your torso. Grabbing your bag and putting it on your lap.
He waks over to the opening as the many recruits line up. You can’t get in line due to your wheelchair. He opens the door, the Pandoran air coming into the plane. It holds a different density, you can tell by looking at it.
“Go, go, go!” He waves the recruits on and out the door. You bend your head, trying to get a better look at the outside but a recruit blocks your vision.
You pull out the small wheelchair they gave you, unfolding it and putting it in-front of you. You use your arms to get yourself out of your seat and onto the chair.
“There’s no such thing as an ex-marine. You may be out. But you never lose the attitude.”
You pull your legs onto the chair as the last few people file out. Your breathing is heavy and audible under the mask. You start rolling towards the door, sighing slightly.
“Let’s go special case! Do not make me wait for you!” The grey scrub man says. You roll your eyes after you pass him. ‘Special Case’. Of course.
You roll down the ramp, veiwing all of the Army dogs in front of you. There is a lot of technology you have never seen, except on the TV. It’s not like you could afford it anyway.
“Back on Earth, these guys were Army dogs, Marines, fighting for freedom.”
The landing platform buzzed with a restless energy. Many people shouting over the mechanic sounds of machines and other big things you couldn’t name. A big walking machine, being controlled by a Marine passes you. Stopping slightly to look at your crippled self.
“Look out, hot rod!” He yells out, voice slightly robotic. You roll your eyes for what feels like the nth time today. Can everyone stop point out the obvious? You look around at your surroundings. Many grey buildings and planes fill your view. All boring. All expensive.
“But out here they’re just hired guns, taking the money, working for the company.”
You spot a few heavily armed Marines in front of you.
“Check this out, man.” The dark skinned one says to the paler, bald headed one. “Wheelchair wonder.” He nods his head towards you. The bald one walks closer to his friend.
“Oh, man, that is just wrong.” The bald one says. You glare as you pass by. He waves mockingly and says, “Hey, sweet cheeks.” You have a disgusted look on your face.
“You’re not in Kansas anymore.” The colonel states loudly, walking through past the many Marines sitting at tables. “You’re on Pandora, ladies and gentlemen. Respect that fact, every second of every day.”
The Colonel has three big scratch scars on the side of his head, giving him a more intimidating look. As if he wasn’t intimidating enough. He walks slowly, inspecting every recruit, hands balled up in fists. He has guns in his holsters, a scary smile on his face.
“If there is a hell, you might want to go there for some R&R after a tour on Pandora.” He points at the window, outside. The lush of the forest shines through the window. “Out there, beyond that fen, every living thing that crawls, flies or squats in the mud wants to kill you and eat your eyes for Jujubes.” You roll closer to where everyone is seated as he continues. “We have an indigenous population of humanoids called the Na’vi. They’re fond of arrows dipped in a neuro toxin that’ll stop your heart in one minute. And they have bones reinforced with naturally occurring carbon fibers. They are very hard to kill..” He makes eye contact with you ad you adjust your bag onto your lap. “My job is to keep you alive. I will not succeed. Not with all of you. If you wish to survive, you jeed to cultivate a strong mental attitude. You’ve got to obey the rules. Pandora rules.” You have nostalgic smile on your face.
“There’s nothing like an old school safety briefing to put your mind at ease.”
“Excuse me, excuse me. Y/N!” A man walks up from behind you and your turn your head to look at him. He looks nerdy, a red shirt with a green vest over it. “You’re Y/N, right? Sarah’s sister.” You slow down your wheels as he walks beside you. “Wow! You look just like her.” He adjusts the strap on his bag before gaining some shame and holding out his hand to shake.
“Sorry, I’m Norm. Spellman.” You took his hand and shook it great fully. Thankful to maybe make a friend. “I went through Avatar training with her.”
“This is the bio lab.” Norm says as you walk through the sliding doors. He looks back at you and smiles. “We’re gonna spend a lot of time up here.” He states, giddy and smiling like an idiot.
Around the lab, maybe sounds could be heard. The faint hiss of airlocks and doors opening or closing. The writing of a pencil or pen. The steady thrum of the recycled oxygen pooling into the lab, the hum of generators. People typing of gadgets or talking with one another. It’s very lively with the scientists.
“Hey, how ya doing?” Norm is one social butterfly. He’s practically shaking with excitement when he shakes a scientist’s hand. “Norm, Avatar Driver.” He states before looking up at the signs. “Uh,link…” he looks at a particular sign while you look around the lab. “Here’s the link room right here.” He points to a door as you turn your head towards the tanks.
“Me and Norm are here to drive these remotely-controlled bodies called Avatars.”
The tanks filled with a blue liquid of stuff you cannot remember the name right. You make your way over to them, scientists are inspecting something on it. You really can’t understand what they’re doing as you stop and inspect the Avatars.
“And they’re grown from human DNA mixed with the DNA of the natives.”
“Hey. Welcome.” A scientist with black hair and tan skin turns around to shake your hand and you take it. “Welcome to Pandora. Good to have you.”
You let out a chuckle at the Avatars. When you first saw them they were small. Merely children. Now they are fully grown and huge. They were huge when they were children too. Basically as tall as you.
“Damn. They got big.” You laugh a rare smile gracing your face.
“Yeah,” Norm looks at his Avatar. It looks like him. Same norse, same eyebrows. “They fully mature on the flight out. So the proprioceptive sims seem to work really well.” He informs you.
“Yeah, they’ve got great muscle tone.” The scientist who greet you adds on, tapping on a screen. “It’ll take us a few hours to get them decanted, but you guys can take the out tomorrow.” Butterflies fill your stomach. You’re exacted to finally walk again. “There’s yours.” He points to the other tank.
You roll over to it, inspecting it closely. Her hair is braided down in a long one. She us moving up and down, fingers twitching, arms wriggling. She looks so much like Sarah. Same nose. Same eyebrows. Norm and the scientist walk up behind you.
“Looks like her.” You say with a reminiscent smile. You remember her face. Although you are twins, hers was much more bright and lively. You lost that liveliness the second you couldn’t walk.
“No, it looks like you.” Norm tells you, an excited expression on his face. “This is your Avatar now, Y/N.”
“And the concept is that every driver is matched to their own Avatar,” You look down at the table, then back up at the camera. The red light blinks, signaling that it’s still recording. “So that their nervous systems are in tune…or something.” You shrugged, your head tilting in thought. “Which is why they offered me the gig,” You scratch the side of your face before putting your head in your palm. “because I can link with Sarah’s Avatar. Which is insanely expensive.”
You look back at Max, you learned his name, and Norm who are talking about some science stuff you might never understand. “Is this right? I just say whatever to the video log?” You chuckle in mockery,m. Why do you have to record this?
“Yeah, we gotta get in the habit of documenting everything.” Norm says, looking up from whatever it is that he is looking at. “You know, what we see, what we feel. It’s all part of the science.”
“And good science is good observation.” Max adds. You turn back around to face the camera, scratching the back of your neck lightly.
“Plus, it’ll help to keep you sane for the next six years.” Norm tells you.
“All right.” You look directly in the eye of the camera. “So, uh, well, here I am…doing science.” You let out a huff, almost a laugh but not quite.
“They’re coming out!” A random scientist announces.
“Attention, drivers coming out of the link.” A robotic sounding voice announces on the PA.
The lab is filled with the sounds of whirring of machines as they get pulled out of there link pods.
A woman with red hair, wearing a green shirt comes out of the link with a groan, putting her head in her hands. She sits back up to get out of the pod.
“Who’s got my goddamn cigarette?” She asks everyone. She sounds like she already has a headache. “Guys! What’s wrong with this picture?” She gestures her hand up. A technician grabs her a cigarette and her lab coat. “Thank you.” She says.
“Grace Augustine is a legend. She’s the head of the Avatar program.” Norm tells you while walking beside you. Your both following Max as he leads you to a scientist named Grace Augustine. You don’t know this woman but apparently she knows a lot about Na’vi and runs the program. “She wrote the book. I mean, literally wrote the book on Pandoran botany.”
“Grace, this is Norm Spellman and Y/N L/N.” Max tells Grace, gesturing towards you and Norm. Grace ignores you completely and looks at Norm.
“Norm, I’ve heard good things about you.” Norm nods and shakes her hand. “Fyape lu nga na’vi?” (How is your Na’vi?)
“Awvea ultxari ohengeyä, Nawma Sa'nok lrrtok siveiyi.” (May the great mother smile upon our first meeting.) Norm’s grin spreads throughout his face. You snort to yourself. He is such a fanboy.
“Skepek, slä lì'upam lu tsìltsan.” (Formal, but pronunciation is good.) You can’t understand what they are saying but you assume it is good from Norm’s smile and Grace’s impressed nod of her head. She’s still ignoring you.
“Oe have practiced for mrr yo'kofya slä tsatseng lu mi nìtxan ne nume.” (I have practiced for five years but there is still much to learn.) Norm looks a little shy. You look between them, very confused and it is evident as Max steps in.
“Uh, Grace?” Max says and Grace turns her head towards you with a scowl. “This is Y/N L/N.”
“Ma’am.” You hold out your hand for her to shake.
“Yeah, yeah. I know who you are, and I don’t need you.” She tells you, and you frown in embarrassment and anger. She leaves your hand hanging until you put it on your lap. “I don’t need you. I need your sister.” Anger flares in your mind again.
“Well, she’s dead.” You look down at your lap in dissatisfaction. You hate saying that word. Dead. You grimace then look back up to her. “I know it’s a bug inconvenience.”
“How much lab training have you had?”
“I made a little science fair volcano once.” You say sarcastically. “Won first place.”
“You see? You see? I mean, they’re just pissing on us without giving us the courtesy of calling it rain. I’m going to Selfridge.” She goes to walk away as Max tries to stop her.
“Grace—” Max tries but is interrupted.
“N, man. This is such bullshit!” She makes her way to the door. “He has no business sticking his nose in my department.” She rants as she walks out the door. Max walks back to your chair.
“Here tomorrow, 0800.” He tells you, slightly leaning down. That’s what you hated about being in a wheelchair. Everyone tried to crouch for you when they could just stand. “Try and use smart words.” And with that, he walks away.
“So, how much link time have you logged?” Grace asks Norm as you all walk to the link pods. They put you in thin grey clothes. It’s quite chilly in the lab and the clothes aren’t helping.
“About 520 hours.” Norm fiddles with his fingers as he goes to get in his link pod.
“That’s good.” Grace mumbles, she stop at the link pods next to Norms. “You’re here.” She points at the pod. “How much have you logged?”
“None, but I read a manual.” You tell her, smiling slightly. You stop in-front of the pod, pressing on the squishiness of the inside. “This is cool.” You say to yourself.
The machine powers up, making a whirring noise. You grunt as you use your hands to get up and into the pod bed. When your butt hits the pod, you grab your knees and hoist your legs up, adjusting them to the body outline of the pod.
“So you just figured you’d come out here, to the most hostile environment known to man,” Grace pauses, pressing a button on the pad. “With no training of any kind, to see how it went. What was going through your head?” She turns to look at you, her face stern.
“Maybe I was sick of people telling me what I could and couldn’t do.” You sass, she pushes your head for your lying down.
“Keep your arms in, hands in.” She pushes your arms closer to your body. Grace places a metal structure built to the shame of your upper half on top of you. “Head down.” She pushed your head down. You try to inspect what’s been placed on you. “Down.” She pushed it again.
“Just relax and let your mind go blank. Shouldn’t be that hard for you.” She smiles mockingly and pats your forehead before she starts to close the link pods.
“Suck my—” You don’t get to finish as she closes the pod. You look around on the inside. It feels very cramped. Inside has a sort of green hue that you hate.
You close your eyes as you hear a faint beeping sound around you. The machine thrums and bright light surrounds you. You feel like you’re traveling through a portal. More like flying through it.
You open your eyes, vision blurry. You hear faint voices and snapping in your ear. Are they talking to you? As your vision unblurs you see two doctors standing over your head. They shine a light in your eyes and your pupils dilate.
“Vision looking good.” The woman says. You bring your hand to the front of your face, you’re blue. You’re big. You sit up quickly, making you dizzy.
“How are you doing, Y/N?” The female doctor asks.
“Hey.” You mumble, smiling.
“Woah, Y/N, take it easy.” The male doctor says. “Wiggle your toes for me.” You wiggle them. You wiggle them! They work! “Okay, good, good.” You stand up.
“Wait, Y/N! Stop, sit down!” Your tail hits the woman in the face and she groans. “Control your tail!” You stand up and take a few steps, slightly wobbly because you are not used to walking.
“Someone get a sedative!” A doctor yells as you begin walking to the window. Your smile is huge.
“Y/N, calm down or there going to out you out.” Norm tells you from across the room.
You laugh then run to the door, running outside. The sun shines brightly in your face and you blink to get used to it. The doctors and Norm chase you as you run, not being able to catch up to you in your haste. You pass Avatars playing basketball.
“Oops, excuse me.” You say, sliding by one of them. You hear a faint ‘hey!’ in the background.
“Y/N, we’re not supposed to be running!” Norm yells from behind you.
You run until you come across plants, skidding to a stop on the dirt. It flies up in your abrupt stop. You laugh and look at your feet. You can run walk, sit down. But, you don’t want to sit down. You pant heavily from the running. Then an Avatar comes out.
“Hey, Y/N.” Grace greets. Well, she sounds like Grace but you have to confirm it.
“Who else, dumbass?” She laughs. “Think fast!” She exclaims as she throws a fruit at you. You catch it and inspect it. It’s dark purple and slightly spiky. Grace nods at you to try it, so you do. When you bite into it, you’re met with a mango taste, but better. No fruit tasted like this on Earth. You let out a moan of enjoyment and Grace laughs.
When you come back to your human body, you try to wiggle your toes. You can’t. You sigh in disappointment as you look down at your feet. Now you can’t walk. Great. You push the pod open and sit up, sighing heavily.
“Welcome back.” Max mumbles, looking at the pad next to your pod. You grumble as you push yourself off the pod and onto your wheelchair. “You alright?” Max asks, down looking at you. You nod and grab your legs to put them on the wheelchair.
“I’m Trudy. I fly all the science sorties.” Trudy says as she leads you to someone who needs to talk to you. The Colonel, you’re sure. She’s on the curvier side and she wears a green flight suit. She stops next to a plane. “And this here is my baby. Hold on a second.”She smiles and pats the plane, walking to the side and stepping on the ladder. “Hey, Wainfleet. Get it done! We bounce at 0-9.” She tells a bald man.
“Yeah, I’m on it, captaine!” Wainfleet grits through his teeth.
“Vine strikes still lose.” Trudy complains as she starts waking again. You follow.
“You guys are packing some heavy gear.” You note, something almost running into you.
“Watch it!” Trudy exclaims in annoyance. “Yeah, that’s cause we’re not the only thing flyin’ around out there. Or the biggest. I’m gonna need you on a door gun. I’m a man short.”
“Thought you’d never ask.” You joke. She chuckles.
“There’s your man.” She points ahead. “See you in the flight line.” She fist bumps you and walks away. You look over to where she pointed, the Colonel working out, his muscles bulge as he lifts the dumbbell.
“You wanted to see me, Colonel?” You ask, rolling to a stop in front of him.
“This low gravity will make you soft. You get soft,” He places the dumbbell on the hook and sits up to look at you. “Pandora will shit you out dead with zero warning.”
When you try to go to sleep that night, the Colonels words replay in your mind.
‘I want you to learn these savages from the inside.’
Fear strikes through you. Will any of these ‘savages’ try to kill you like he described? That thought makes a shiver go up your spine, but you shake it off. Nothing is going to kill you. Not even those ‘ignorant blue savages’ as the Colonel described.
