ATTENTION SUPPORTERS OF 'TRADITIONAL' MARRIAGE
You are entitled to your own opinion and to the belief that marriage should be between a man and a woman. You are allowed to practice any religion of your choosing and you may, personally, follow the rules of that religion. I respect your opinion and your religion, and I respect your right to have an opinion and practice a religion, no matter how flawed/corrupt I believe your opinion or religion may be.
You are NOT, however, entitled to use your PERSONAL BELIEFS to strip LEGAL RIGHTS away from gay couples. You cannot use the government to force your religious views onto myself or others who may not share those same views. It is shameful that you would consciously choose to oppress the freedoms of others just because they believe differently than you do, just because they choose to sin in a different way. Do not use your religious liberties to deny an entire population of human beings their legal, government-provided rights.
Just to let you know, not every person believes in God or in Jesus or in The Bible or even in a higher power. Not every person has a religious view or standing. Not every person feels obligated to abide by "laws" set forth by a spiritual deity who may or may not even exist. This is why a separation of church and state exists. If you are a believer of God, then God's rules apply to you and you are free to follow them. You do not have to participate in or support gay marriage. But God's rules do NOT apply to me, nor to fellow non-believers, and so myself and others should be free to choose -- from a legal standpoint -- who we want to marry.
SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND FUCKING STATE. Keep your religious BELIEFS away from the RIGHTS of my gay friends & family, and STOP PERSECUTING.
"Same Love" by Ryan Lewis & Macklemore ft. Mary Lambert is accompanied by a video directed by Ryan Lewis and Jon Jon Augustavo. Both the song and video follow a young male narrator's journey in accepting and affirming his identity as gay. The beginning and end of the video start in a hospital room: the beginning shows the birth of our narrator and the end shows the death of him and his partner. Before the credits roll, the audience is shown a final glimpse of a mother's hand holding the hand of her newborn. Using images from birth to death to birth again, this video argues that life is cyclical. Paired with with lyrics of the song and bulk of the video's content, the audience is lead to believe the issue of same-sex oppression is also cyclical; however, the video's characters overcome such oppression through marriage and growing old together, suggesting that this cycle can be a positive one. But how do we make it a positive cycle? The video suggests at its conclusion to "Approve Ref 74" which refers to Washington State's Referendum 74 legalizing same-sex marriage. But how much in the video has to do with the legislative piece itself? How much does the song lyrics have to do with the legislative piece? These are two of many questions we can ask about such text!
