“Are they doing what I think they’re doing?” Thorin looked at me – eyebrows raised – and I had to admit that I was free of any incriminating knowledge because I had only met that girl the previous day and had not had any chance to learn more about her.
I was not about to tell him that I knew that she was – at least sexually – very much involved with whatever that golden-haired pervert was to him; their exact family tree was still very much a mystery to me.
“Ah uni…spring feelings and such,” Balin chirped as he started heaping coal – a little too much in my opinion – into the tiny, rickety grill they had erected at the far end of the site.
“It is autumn, Balin, and it is not a general rule,” Dwalin muttered, visibly annoyed at something.
“ToTho seem to be doing just fine,” I mumbled under my breath, freezing when Tova’s eyes bored into mine.
“What did you just call me?” Her voice was dangerously even, but her eyes narrowed, and her mouth contracted into a puckered asshole in her face. Ah, she had not had that talk with Thorin yet, I understood, but then again, how ambiguous could it be when a woman showed up at a family barbecue with a man wrapped around her ass, his thighs pressed along hers?
Especially as they had kissed – again – in front of everybody. No broken hearts, my ass.
“Oh, they have a couple’s nickname? Say again?” Kíli seemed very fond of gossip and shoved his arm into mine to pull me away a few steps as if that prevented anyone from overhearing his excited whispers.
“Do you think they’ll end up together? It would be so nice for Thorin, he seems to really like her; he’s a cool dude.”
I took a few deep breaths; my first instinct was deflection and mockery – as per usual – but his eyes were so open and honest, and I had to admit that I quite liked Thorin; he was good to Tova, and he made her smile.
“I do not know, I hope so?” My words were a surprise to myself; I had not been aware how strongly I felt about Tova’s happiness but seeing her sleep so peacefully in his arms had mellowed my cold, wicked heart.
“You know who else is really rad? Cousin Ori, he’s a bit of a loser, I’ll give you that, but he’s terribly kind and he draws really well,” the boy – who had been a gossipmongering fishwife in a previous life – blabbed on merrily.
“Should I go save her?” Thorin asked Tova with a small smile as they watched me go.
“In a second, let’s go for a small walk while your…relative sets the whole forest on fire,” Tova replied, pulling him into the opposite direction of where Fíli and the girl had disappeared to after nodding shortly at Balin who was still heaping coals onto the grill.
She felt like she needed to address the elephant in the forest; she would have been amiss if she screamed at her roommate for not being clear and then, turned around and left her own lover in the dark.
“Where do you think this is going, Thorin?” she asked gently, laughing when he – naïvely – told her that the path led up to a small brook, and that maybe, they could go up there later and dip their feet in.
“No, I mean you and me,” she clarified while schooling her face into a neutral expression, especially as the old nervous energy returned to his beautiful features, the thick brows knitting to throw dark shadows over his sparkling eyes.
“I…I will get better at it, I promise,” he expostulated passionately, grabbing her hands and holding them close to his chest, “if you’re willing to give me another chance, I’ll get it right eventually.”
Tova was confused for a moment before she realised that he was referencing their lovemaking. “Oh, you fool, there was nothing wrong with what you did so far, and I don’t necessarily intend to stop sleeping with you, but…is that it? Because I feel like having barbecues with your family and having you kissing me in front of them is something quite different, no?”
The sun shifted and made his eyes light up with all the shades of grey and blue of a mountain spring in summer as pure sensual pleasure upon hearing her words was replaced with quiet apprehension.
“Jia? A word…” For the first time since my arrival, Ori had actually addressed me directly and I turned from Kíli’s cheerful face to the rather serious one I had last seen on a white pillow, relaxed and peaceful in slumber.
“Yes?” What a stupid thing to say, I called myself out. I knew that I should apologise for just vanishing and – probably – for not calling him a friend right away and for a thousand other things but – as always when I was feeling guilty – my mouth wouldn’t remember how to properly form words.
In the background, Dwalin was calling Kíli over to come slice bread and set out plates even though the fire wasn’t even properly started yet, but I could appreciate that he was trying to keep the young one from interfering unnecessarily.
“You could have woken me up, Jia, I would have gotten you a coffee,” Ori started and, immediately, the nagging twinge of a bad conscience worsened, “I was quite distressed when I woke up and you were gone, I thought something had happened to you. Also, you have not replied to my message, and you did not even really acknowledge me upon arriving. What exactly have I done wrong and how can I make it right again?”
A strangled sound escaped me before I burst into tears, making Ori swat his hands at me as if I was on fire.
“No, don’t cry…Oh no, why are you crying? What? I fucked up apologising, this must be a new record!” he exclaimed, visibly distressed by my reaction but – unfortunately – that only made me cry harder.
“Why are you so nice?” I sobbed, making no sense whatsoever.
“What? You are crying! How is making girls cry nice?” Ori looked positively distraught at this point, shifting side to side as if truly unsure whether to bodily tackle me or just run for his life.
“It’s all my fault though,” I wailed, too tired of holding everything in to feel ashamed about the spectacle I was making of myself.
“Hush, nothing is your fault,” Ori promised and then his arms closed around me, and I breathed in so deeply, I would have sucked him into my lungs if his ass hadn’t been fat enough to keep him on the ground.
I had tried, I had fought valiantly, I had said stupid things and stared at random trees, but ultimately, I had been right in saying that there was no real way I would be able to withstand the draw if he decided on reaching out. Only, like a vampire, I had to be invited in; like a genie, I had to have my lamp rubbed first, and Ori was notoriously bad at that.
“This is naughty, Fí, your family is just down that path,” Lo moaned as his lips slid up her neck at the same pace as his hands shoved down her trousers.
“They think we’re fighting, they won’t interfere,” he replied, clamping his thighs around hers so she couldn’t spread her legs to keep him from pulling the pants over the delicious curve of her ass. He had been looking forward to shooting the breeze with the others, but as soon as Lo had appeared, he had known that his cousins could go up in flames like vampires in the sun for all he cared.
She had looked like the perfect little heiress with her sweater that had probably cost more than his whole wardrobe, holding her fancy champagne and being so damn pretty he had wanted to spread her out on the table right there and then and bury himself in her.
It was his own insecurity that had made him snap and he had regretted it instantly, but – if he was completely honest – at times, he wished that Lo could be more than the girl he purposefully met by chance everywhere and all the time. Beyond that gorgeous body of hers, she had a wicked sense of humour and a lot of smarts, and he longed to be able to have a quiet evening with her, a whole evening, one they could waste watching television or discussing something.
Then again, her hands under his shirt and her lips espousing the curve of his right ear felt so good that his toes curled, and he went cross-eyed with pleasure. “Hurry up,” she urged, her nimble fingers trailing down the zipper of his pants without undoing it.
Stifling the moan of frustrated lust that her teasing always provoked, Fíli looked around until he found a rock, fallen from the cliffside beside them that had just the right height. The bushes would conceal their lower bodies, but if one of his friends was to walk past, they’d certainly recognise what was going on.
The danger of getting caught only spurred on the blind lust that had her name, her scent, the melody of her pants written all over it.
“One day, woman, I’ll have all the time in the world with you,” he promised as he lifted her into his arms effortlessly, moaning into her mouth as she slung her legs around his waist, her naked ass warm and smooth in the palms of his hands.
“Hmmm, not today though,” she purred and flicked her tongue along his ear.
