SHE STARED UP AT HIM, EYES wide in surprise. “Mr. Salvatore,” she said in a soft voice, pressing the tips of her fingers to her lips, like she was suppressing a nervous giggle. She averted her eyes, feigning coyness, though in reality trying to hide the sparkle in them at the young man just making this easier and easier for her with every word her spoke. “Are you asking me to be your date to the function?” She had not been invited herself, so she would presumably be his date. And be introduced as such if these functions were anything like the ones she had attended before.
She hid her lower face behind her hand, as if trying to hide the blush on her cheeks, before glancing up at him. “But you know nothing of me! Surely other young ladies would be vying for a place on your arm, are there not? Besides this one lady that does not seem worth your time, I mean.”
She gave a little shake of her head, a smile tugging at her lips as if the thought itself amused her. “You are very bold, Damon, to ask so soon. I ought to make you work a little harder for such a privilege.” Her tone was playful, but she lowered her gaze again, as though embarrassed by her own daring words.
“Still…” she drew the word out softly, letting the silence linger just long enough to keep him hanging, “if you should continue to prove yourself such a perfect gentleman, I suppose I might be persuaded.” The sparkle returned to her eyes when she looked back up at him, a fleeting glimmer quickly tucked away behind the practiced demureness of her smile.
