“ASSAULT BRINGS 15 DAYS IN JAIL,” Montreal Star. August 5, 1930. Page 3. --- Found guilty of assault at his trial in Recorder's Court this morning, George Fortuch was sentenced to 15 days hard labor and placed under a bond of $200 to keep the peace for one year.
Fortuch appeared in court a week ago to plead not guilty to a charge of assaulting the cashier of the Little Martinique Cafe, 17 Craig street east. Neither the complainant nor the accused could speak English, but through Court Interpreter Dobransky, they testified that they had quarreled after Fortuch had finished a meal at the restaurant. It was not clearly established that Fortuch refused to pay for his meal, as was alleged by the complainant, but the Recorder decided that at least the accused had no excuse for his admitted assault upon the complainant.
Besides the prison sentence, Fortuch was ordered to pay $2 damages for breaking window, and for two cups and two plates which he broke over the head of the complainant.
