Drew Talbert’s YouTube series about employees at a restaurant is so unbelievably funny now that I work in a kitchen.

Admittedly we have way better hours and breaks (we even have an unofficial 30 minutes break in the morning that comes with free breakfast) and we get to eat as much food and take as many sodas and water as we want, but the dynamics are the same. Servers complaining about customers yet making friends (and flirting) with regulars, the kitchen staff who acts like a pirate crew and thinks the prices for the food they make is outrageous (our baker could not fathom how his buns and cakes could possibly be that expensive for the customers “What do you mean the buns cost 20 kroner? It doesn’t even cost 1 krone to make ONE!”) and the dishwasher being too busy for anyone’s shit.

Only thing missing from Drew’s series is the 60 years old head server being a former stripper who’s always ranking male customers on a hotness scale but that might just be my specific kitchen…

Restaurant workers who have to clean tables, what's the most annoying thing customers do that makes cleaning worse?

Push everything to the back of a booth so you have to climb in to get plates/etc

Hide chewed food in/under napkins (especially cloth napkins)

Let their kids make huge messes all over the table and floor

Spill sauces/drinks on the table without wiping any of it up

Refuse to let you clear their dishes before they leave

Stick gum under plates or tables

Something else

I haven't worked this kind of job

Next time you’re looking at your check at a restaurant, wondering if your server /really/ deserves 20+%, I invite you to consider that they may have been holding in a shit for several hours because it’s been too busy to find more than 90 consecutive seconds to do anything not work related, and that by the time they have enough of a lull to go, they may find that they now cannot, in spite of the constant feeling that they need to, and may in fact end up on their toilet at 3 AM after getting home, head in their hands wondering when they might find release so they can at last go to bed. Story not from my own experience, obviously. But I invite you to consider this possibility, and then tip them 50%
