A new Regietheater production of Lohengrin:
Interviewer: so how did you come up with the concept and interpretation for this particular production?
Director: I got bitten by a swan on Lake Geneva when I was ten years old.
Interviewer:
Director: well, to be more precise, my dad held my hand out for the swan to bite it.
Ludovic Tézier: *exists*
Every Regie Director: let’s give him a pretty white shirt with dress trousers and suspenders and mess up his hair a bit
the ending of this Tcherniakov Onegin was literally
Onegin (already a fucking mess, whips out pistol): if you don’t run away with me I will DIE
Tatiana (absolute queen): then perish
In honour of tonight’s Lohengrin premiere
BAYERISCHE STAATSOPER
Munich Trovatore with Kaufmann and Harteros is streamed by the BSO for free!
also feat. a Really Crazy Production, it’s perfect for bingo!
yeah this is the one with Naked Ghostly Grandma
types of Regietheater
1. Boring Suits and also cheapskate minimalist sets, otherwise not much difference from normal
2. World War I or II. so creative.
3. when are we? fuck if I know
4. post-apocalyptic whatever (disappointing lack or zombies or mutated monsters, like come on, add godzilla or something)
5. the director was high
6. the director was high but also knows what fun means
7. the director just wants to piss off the audience and has the maturity of a teenage edgelord (he’s also high)
8. the director probably used to write Ron The Death Eater type fanfics and now he’s doing it to opera characters
9. the director is a furry
10. the director is not fully committed to Regie but also KINDA wants to upgrade so it’s 19th century or Edwardian era
11. very expensive modern/futuristic set but forgets to actually DIRECT so everyone just defaults back to park and bark
Types of Regietheater sets
1) almost bare stage with some IKEA furniture
2) Rusty Industrial Whatever
3) ruins (probably after bombing, sometimes combined with 2, usually looks like something out of Mass Effect 3)
4) some surrealist bizarro dreamscape
5) detailed, realistic, specific decade (rare because Regie directors are fucking cheapskates)
6) almost bare stage vol. 2: this time with bad lighting too
7) naked extras acting as set
8) Ugly Shiny Metal Whatever, sometimes combined with period costumes to be more confusing
9) just a fuckton of literal trash
10) neutral background designed for constant projections that look like the director was high the whole time
