Most students know regional accreditation exists. Very few understand what CHEA recognition actually means — and why the distinction matters more than most people realize.
Regional accreditation covers US universities by geography — seven bodies, each covering a specific region. But CHEA — the Council for Higher Education Accreditation — is the oversight body that recognizes accrediting organizations, including those seven regional bodies.
Critically, CHEA also maintains the International Quality Group (CIQG) database — listing internationally recognized accreditation bodies from around the world. Bodies listed here, like AUAP and ECLBS, are formally recognized by CHEA as legitimate international accrediting organizations. Institutions they accredit hold accreditation that CHEA formally recognizes.
