regulus who only smokes around Peter and becomes a chatterbox while Peter goes silent around him and it’s their way for recharging. one day Remus finds out Peter isn’t making regulus pay and starts asking why. Peter just shrugs and mumbles “idk”

but then at a party Peter shotguns smoke into Regulus’s mouth and every is shocked by the pairing. Overly jolly prep boy dealer Peter with his angry little goth boyfriend who only talks to him

absolutely let's get into it....

'me and the bad bitch i pulled by framing his brother for murder' specifically comes from my idea of like. if regulus survived the cave and the war ended as per canon and then he went on to hunt for the remaining horcruxes whilst peter is also looking for a horcrux to bring voldemort back with. they could meet. and they could have the most fucked up philosophically twisted situationship everrrr bound by this fragment of voldemort's soul that both of them Need for opposite reasons. both of them feeling that cruel twist of irony that once again they are bound by voldemort, a man they cannot help but respect and fear even while viewing him as a little beneath them. both of them having a vague disgust for the other that can Only manifest in psychosexual torture.

more broadly i like regulus and peter in the sense that they are diametrically opposed to each other. they are incapable of liking each other because they represent to each other the Worst Possible Choice either of them could have made (from their perspective -- regulus cannot imagine loneliness like peter has willingly chosen, and peter cannot imagine powerlessness like regulus has willingly chosen). and for that exact reason, they cannot ignore or forget each other! they're fascinated with each other the way ppl are fascinated with gruesome suicide. the way ppl are fascinated with how their lives could've played out if they had approached the crossroads of their life and chosen the Other path.

and unlike pairings with sev, i like how both regulus and peter's personal angst is not wrapped up in how they existed on the Outside of adoration and respect and admiration. they are not characters who stewed in personal loathing, both of their arcs hinge on action and choices and the desire to assert themselves upon the world. in my opinion, although reg was lonely and peter was resentful, they both were fairly comfortable with who they were -- there's a degree of arrogance in that, and they both recognize that in each other, and they perversely enjoy recognizing it.

i think they fuck a few times in a sort of high-handed hand-jobby (laugh reel) way. they're playing gay chicken but it's "you lose if you acknowledge the unspeakable tragedy that exists between us without which we would have nothing to say to one another" it's fun for them to pretend that the only thing they have to argue about is their Philosophical World View. they think they're recreating the dialogues of plato as they give each other uncomfortably dry hand jobs but it always falls a little short because of the Thing. The Thing They Don't Talk About. and then voldy's soul is just sitting there like a freaky little homunculus

bonus: if you have read tgcf you will already know this but the main antagonist of tgcf has this weird 800-year-long obsession and carefully cultivated power dynamic with the main character that stems from the fact that their characters are Direct mirrors of each other. and the dynamic involves the antagonist meticulously creating scenarios that he hopes will destroy the protag's faith in humanity and love and compassion and the novel ends with a confrontation of those ideals in which the protag says their similar pasts have Nothing to do with the way the antagonist turned out. and that him losing faith in humanity was a choice he made and not inevitable at all. and the protag proves this by refusing to choose anything except love. this too is regpeter

I have so many opinions about regpeter it's crazy..... they're a parasite in my brain eating up all of my other thoughts. allow me to yap about them in depth now:

their dynamic in any au/setting is easy for me to picture but hard for me to verbalize... I heavily subscribe to modern au regpeter where pete is this shy stoner type and reg is his cunty goth bf (thank you jen for coming up with that!!) but I mostly think of them in a more canon compliant sense.

I think they're drawn to each other because, at heart, they're both followers. peter prefers not having to think for himself/ likes just going with the flow because he's friends with very headstrong people, and it's easier to just do what they're doing. and regulus does pretty much the exact same thing, he follows his parents' word because that's what's expected of him, he doesn't bother thinking too much about what being a death eater represents or entails. they're cowardly people pretending they're not, unable to confide in their loved ones about their true feelings because 1. it's frowned upon to be so unopinionated and 2. they're too scared to. this is why I think they find so much solace in each other. regulus for sure believes that muggles are beneath him but I don't think he agrees with killing them. not because he thinks their lives have just as much value as his, but because he's like 17 and murder is fucking terrifying. he takes the mark and immediately regrets it because he's being forced to act now, he can't just nod along and pretend he's so enthusiastic about voldys cause. peter's situation is so similar it's actually kind of funny....

he joins the order because the other three did, and because maybe he thought it would buy him more protection in the war, but now he's being sent on missions and the more things develop, the more scary it gets. he sees other order members get injured or die and he sees how determined they are to kill the least amount of people as possible, opting to try and imprison the death eaters rather than take them out completely. peter quickly understands that this isn't where he'll be safest, so when he's given the chance to switch sides.... he does.

peter gets the mark just like reg, they're both in voldys inner circle, so I imagine they see each other at meetings. I think peter would take one look at the people in that room, see regulus, a sort of familiar face, and absolutely cling to him. he tries his hardest to always sit next to him, looks to him for approval whenever he has to speak. regulus is weirded out at first but the longer they talk and sort of float around each other, the more he understands that peter is a lot like him. eventually, he gets the full story on peters' betrayal, complex feelings included, and for the first time in his life, regulus has someone he can genuinely relate to. he feels like he can finally breathe, like he has someone on his team. they're both objectively bad people, but they're a very similar brand of bad that nobody else on the Dark side is. they can tell each other their worst thoughts and know that the other won't judge them because they likely feel the exact same way about something else.

i think they each feel immense guilt for their choices (peter, for betraying his friends; regulus for being exactly who sirius says he is), they just don't have the courage or reason to change their situations (yet). since this whole thing has been pretty canon compliant, I'm not sure if they would ever define their relationship in concrete terms.... but the feelings are definitely there!! it's very private, very secretive, absolutely nobody knows. at meetings, they're just like everyone else there: closed off, cold, aloof. they don't really talk to each other, peter quickly stops looking at regulus so much. but behind closed doors... they're wrapped around each other in utter silence, just allowing themselves to breathe. sometimes they talk, sometimes they do other things, sometimes they just sit and do nothing.

I haven't really considered what would happen after the whole horcrux situation, how regulus' choice would change things between them, but I imagine that their quiet tranquility would probably end. if reg tells him at all, pete would 100% try to talk him out of going to the cave. the idea that they're both cowards, but given the right circumstances, they can force themselves to be brave is really interesting to me, especially given what they each chose to be brave about. because reg did manage to gather the courage to do the right thing, despite how hard it must have been to go against his family. but peter didn't. he just got worse, summoning his own courage to give up james and lily, to frame sirius, to kill those muggles, to do all of these things until he wasn't scared of doing them anymore. it's just something that scratches my brain....

this got really long I'm so sorry. I'm not even sure if it even describes their relationship the way I intended but oh well!

i was going to answer this and then my fucking rat died…….. but in honor or my babiest of boys i will talk about another rat (peter) and his boyfriend <3

so. i’ve been thinking a lot about how they would get together….. and ive been thinking a lot about unrequited jegulus. so i think peter has had a crush on regulus for a very long time but a very managable one. he thinks reg is pretty and lovely and likes looking at him a lot but he hasn’t ever felt the need to like make a move. my peter has the ultimate autism swag and i think he does hook ups rather than relationships because he’s never really met anyone or considered trying to add someone into his daily routine. hes very comfortable on his own i think!!!! likes his independance and hasn’t ever felt the urge to date someone seriously. he fucks a lot tho i think like hes definitely a dating app person sending the ’u up?’ texts when he’s high

anyway. james starts talking a lot about regulus at some point. that hes started noticing him more and what not and now peters bothered. hes never really been that bothered when reg has been seeing someone except for like mild jealousy and a more sour mood than usual when he has to be around reg and whoever hes dating. but now hes bothered because like james is his friend…. and no one ever says no to james.. pete doesnt think hes ever met someone who doesn’t instantly want him. and so ofc reg would want james. james is james. and that would mean seeing more of regulus if he would be james’ boyfriend . thats when the very serious jealousy starts to settle in. peters always in a foul mood and james is always flirting with regulus now

i havent really gotten to how they actually end up together. i think they haven’t spent a lot of one on one together before but now james starts inviting him to parties or whatever. so maybe they end up somewhere smoking a joint together and spend the entire time just. talking . sitting close together with their shoulders touching and talking in soft voices

so maybe reg starts going to the parties as a way to see peter. i dont think reg is used to calm. and peters very calm. hes a quiet guy but its never really awkward. its just nice ?? reg loves being invited into peters solitude and space. he apologizes profusely for never shutting up and for maybe bothering peter but peter is amused and smitten and realising that letting someone in isn’t as bad as he thought it would be. maybe its not bad at all !!! maybe its actually sort of lovely listening to regs voice while smoking
