Greetings from Western Mass! The Hampshire Admissions team is stuck at home, as an historic “bomb cyclone” buries us in snow. Got a snow day in your neck of the woods, too? What a great time to work on your application! Apply by January 15th for our Regular Decision deadline. Throw on some jammies, and get started here!
Choosing Smith
To be quite honest, this semester has been so hectic, that it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. My classes are challenging, my time with the track team has pushed me physically, and singing with the Smithereens is a true commitment. A lot of the time my friends joke and ask me how I ever go to sleep.
As amazing as my first year at Smith has been, the times I really know I’ve chosen the right school are those moments when I feel miserable and have trouble asking for help. At those times, my classmates, professors, deans, and coaches always ask what they can do to help me succeed. And they act on it. I crossed paths with a teacher from my high school recently who had recommended I apply to Smith, and his wife works at Smith, as well. The first thing he said was: “Are you getting the help you need? What makes Smith great is that everyone is here to help you.” If I had been anywhere else, I don’t know if I could wholeheartedly believe that statement. Smith gave me a great first impression, and has worked to keep it. I wouldn’t have it any other way. Best of luck to everyone deciding on where to go! Choose whatever is right for you - I recommend visiting for Open Campus/Discovery Weekend if you’re considering Smith.
WHY SMITH?
right in time for decisions to be released (yay!!!!), here’s why i chose smith!
academics → when deciding between schools, i looked at the course catalog for smith to get an idea of the classes i could take if i attended. i was immediately drawn to the range of courses, and i loved smith’s open curriculum -- basically, smithies are only obligated to take a writing intensive class their first year & are encouraged to engage with different areas of study, but have no distribution requirements outside of their major! though some students attempt latin honors, where they take courses in seven different disciplines, the school provides a space for us to construct our own schedules and focus on the academic areas we want (not have) to explore. this was my biggest factor for attending...i’m also glad smith lived up to its reputation for having rigorous and rewarding classes & wonderful faculty and staff!
housing → smith’s unique housing system means we live in houses, not dorms! each have their own internally-elected governing bodies of students called house councils, and the architectural style varies between areas of campus and individual houses. i love living with students from all four years, and we even have weekly house teas and events every semester! it’s comforting to return home after a long day and hang out in cozy rooms or communal spaces (each house even has a piano!) with my housemates. i was particularly drawn to this concept of community as a prospective student, and i feel lucky to have found such incredible friends through my house in only two years here.
overall, i love learning and living at smith, and the beautiful campus, challenging curriculum, and incredible students here make it a unique and dynamic place. beyond these two major reasons for attending, i’m so glad i ended up choosing smith! congrats on your acceptance, future class of 2021...come join us!
do you guys have any idea when regular admission decisions will be out?? i’ve tried looking online but can’t find any answers, and i’m anxious to start deciding on a school, smith is the only one i’m waiting on
Hi! I know how stressful it can be to wait for decisions so I’ll do my best to ease your worries. Unfortunately, Smith is one of the last to come out with decisions. Last year, decisions came out on March 23 and the year before that they came out around the same time. I know that this probably is not what you want to hear but know that other people are in the same position as you, in fact, I was just as worried as you a year ago. Hold in there and know that Smith will email you before decisions come out, so you definitely won’t miss it. Good luck!

hello seniors!
I was wondering if you could share:
any advice
colleges you're applying to
your major
your college application process
early decision/early action colleges
your stats
your extracurriculars
(if comfortable) your acceptances/rejections
and anything else you think I should know
Congrats to all of our new Smithies!!
We're happy to have you, class of 2021 - come visit campus soon! You worked so hard to get this acceptance and we're all so happy for you! I can't believe it'll be one year since my acceptance this Sunday...
Hi! I just submitted my application for Regular Decision. Everyone around me is determined that I will get into Smith and I really want to since it is my #1 school but I'm seriously doubting myself right now. Any advice for help? Thanks!
Hello! Congrats on finishing your application! That is so stress inducing, but every step is worth it. It’s easy to feel doubtful - you’re putting yourself out there and you seem small in comparison to an ~institution~. Sometimes the best thing to do is fake ‘til you make it! One time I heard somebody say that in the end it’s you “shopping” for the school that best fits , not vice versa.
Throughout my college process, my ranking of top choices changed a lot. The summer before senior year, Smith was my number 1. By the time I sent everything in, Bryn Mawr had taken that spot. Everyone was certain I’d get into both, but Smith accepted me and Bryn Mawr didn’t. It made me realize that my gut decision was best in the end, Smith was my school. Seeing your friends get into schools on Early Decision makes you wish you didn’t have any room for doubts or difficult choices while you wait until March, but it doesn’t make you any less capable of being here at Smith. You’re someone who reaches out when trying to reach a goal and it seems like you have a great support system, even if they feel a little daunting. You are more than any school’s choice and you are definitely able to get into Smith. Best of luck, I’m rooting for you!
