Light in the Black
@werewitchling : Would you every write something for regulus black? Like a possible mutual pining one but neither know its mutual, regulus knows that his family would never accept them even if it was to happen as the reader is like lily (passionate, outspoken, and yet very compassionate), and just angsty longing for there to have been a 'them'?
Fandom: Harry Potter
Summary: She was his light in the black
Pairing: Regulus Black x Reader
Notes: I went a little… dark. I’m sorry.
You never thought much about being a muggle born. Sure kids pointed it out, and there was definitely a strong sense of pride among those who were pureblood. But those kids were always stuck up so why did it matter what they thought anyway?
Nope, you didn’t really think much of your parents' unmagical abilities.
That was until he came into your life.
Regulus Black.
From the Black family. That family. The one family in the whole school that cares about bloodlines.
Not that you had thought about it when you first met him. You honestly didn’t even know who he was other than the boy that had taken the book you had been struggling to get.
“Uhhh excuse me,” you said. But he walked past you face still buried in the other book he was reading as he flicked his wand pulling a few more books from the shelves. “Hello! Scruffy with the wand!” you snapped earning several shhhh from fellow students and staff.
Glancing up he looked over his shoulder confused. Of course, he was Slytherin. They always acted like they owned everything.
“I was.... I wanted that book,” you said pointing to the floating book.
“Oh? But this is a 5th-year spell book” he said sizing you up, clearly at least a year younger than him.
“Yes, and despite the age difference there was a spell in there I wanted to look over, so, would you mind?” you asked holding your hand out.
“I need it for a test tomorrow.”
“Well I’m good at sharing?” you offered already knowing the answer
“Sure” he shrugged surprising you.
She was his laughter. The one who drove him to be a better person. Was it cliche to say she was the light in his darkness (or blackness if we are going there). But it was true. Before her, Regulus felt like his life was a spinning ball of constant nothing. Just a day upon day of the same.
Sometimes he would see his brother running around the school. So full of life and adventure. Yet here he was. Stuck in the same rut.
That was until she came into his life.
All she had done was shout at him to stop. To hand over that book. He had never been talked to like that before. Most people would just let him be on his way. Never bothering to challenge him. Not one of the great Blacks. But she didn’t know who he was. Even after they spent the day studying together.
And she never asked.
It was as if the world where titles and bloodlines meant more than anything else didn’t exist. To her, it was about experiencing the magic of Hogwarts. It wasn’t about just passing her classes and making her teachers happy. It was about what skills would benefit her. What seemed cool that day.
He would never forget that day when she completed the spell. Rainbow bubbles that would sing. It was just some silly spell but when she got it to work it was as if she had learned how to create gold.
And it was as if his dull world was filled with the same color.
Pure, she was too pure. Untouched by the world around them. Whether it was her closing her ears to the prejudice around them or just her true ignorance he found he beautiful.
So beautiful that he knew he could never soil that purity.
So he spent his life trying to prove he was good enough for her.
Just as vividly as the day you remembered your first-day meeting Regulus you remember the last day you did.
The world was crumbling around you and no matter how much you tried to pretend it wasn’t the predigest was running rampant.
You knew it could never work, which you had never admitted it to him or even yourself.
But you had fallen in love with him.
It had been all the little things. Like him making sure to stop by your class on the way to his. Saving you slice of your favorite pie on Fridays when you were running late to lunch because of your potions class. The way his eyes would crinkle around the edges when he smiled.
It all mad you sick to your stomach. Because you knew you could never tell him. Because of his status as a Black he would never be able to have feelings for you. So why jeopardize what you felt?
So you buried it away.
That was until your last day.
With the war at the very gates of Hogwarts, you're parents decided it was best if they left for America. Your father had found a job in some middle state where the likes of Voldermort and his lackeys couldn't find you. A few smugglers had offered to help you escape. You couldn’t tell anyone, but you couldn't leave. Not yet
Not with this hanging over your head.
“I’m leaving tomorrow. My family…” you paused looking away. Both of you hiding in a secret room you had found a year ago. Regulus’s eyes grew wide as you tried to explain yourself. As if panic was setting into him.
“But for how long, but…”
“I can’t protect them here. I’m just putting them in danger.” you smiled weakly at him, “this is bigger than me… or anyone here.”
He looked away for a moment, for a moment you thought you saw tears. Your heart lurched. Could he? No, you couldn’t make this any harder on yourself than it already was. Gently you took his hands in your own.
“I wasn’t supposed to tell anyone but… Regulus, your one of my best friends… and… I just wish things were different.”
“They will be,” he said giving your hands a squeeze, “I promise, they will be and I will see you again.”
She left.
The one beautiful thing in his world.
She left.
He knew what he had to do. He had to end this war. He had to bring her home.
Bring her back.
It was a mantra in his head. Over and over. She left, bring her back.
Over and over as he buried himself in the Deatheater’s.
Over and over while he helped Dumbledore find the Horcruxes.
Over and over as he drew his last breath.
She left, bring her back.
Bring back his light.
