Reign 2x05 (analysis on the last scene w/ Mary and Francis)
A small analysis on the last scene w/ Mary and Francis.
Damn….that hit me right in the heart. I literally put my hand on my chest when he said those cruel words. I was so upset with him for saying that to her…I just kept screaming “omg just tell her!!”.
However, I don’t think Francis’ intention was to push his own guilt on to Mary though as some have said…but to push her away or give her a reason to be distant with him.
At this point, he knows Mary will keep digging for information and bringing it up because she knows he is hiding something from her and is trying to protect her which she doesn’t think she needs. Remember, Francis is under an enormous amount of stress/pressure. He has just realized he's been tricked, is now being blackmailed due to the decision he made and cannot tell Mary because of the consequences she will have to face along with him if he told her. He is carrying a very heavy burden, is being backed into a corner by Narcisse and has no idea what to do to or how to get out of it. Francis just wants Mary to leave it alone and would probably want to give her any reason to drop it but still she refuses to let it go. Naturally, he’s gonna get frustrated and use anything…anything to get her to stop.
During their argument, notice that Mary is the one and not Francis who first makes the connection of his distant behavior and actions to her miscarriage or her “failure” as Queen (as the realm in those times would see it). The minute she makes the connection, look at Francis’s face. He’s shocked she even made that connection because that’s not at all the connection he neither expected nor wanted her to make. But as she keeps talking ….he quickly recovers and realizes that although he doesn’t want to hurt her in one of the worst kinds of ways, letting her believe that her “failure” is his reason for his secrets and distance might be the only way to keep her out of it. So, he continues with the lie and as much as he does not want to (you can see it in his face and at some points it even pains him to say the words when he turns away from her), it’s what he believes he must do to keep her from being an accessory or accused as an accomplice.
I know some people think frary is ruined but I certainly do not so. They are a very strong couple and I’m sure they will find their footing again. Although the push and pull can hurt sometimes I think it’s perfectly fine that they wrote it this way. Francis and Mary are not a normal couple…they are a couple ruling a country. Life will not always be blissful just as it is in real life. In the situation they are in, I imagine there will be lots of arguments when they aren’t on the same page which is why they were fighting so much before the coronation (before Francis says that it is not just a coronation for a king but also a queen. They are better together as a team. They are stronger as a united front. The same argument Mary brings up when they argue at the end of 2x05 when she questions why Francis has changed his mind so abruptly about a decision they both agreed on.) Plus all these kinds of scenes always brings amazing acting by the cast. So more obstacles the better. To me at least.
What keeps me believing that they will be okay and even stronger is because when things are at their worst Mary and Francis are always there for each other no matter what they might have argued about before. They put their differences aside to make sure the other is okay. They always talk it out in the end and make it work. Is that not what relationships are supposed to be like?
